HERE'S THE STORY:
First Descents is a tremendous organization that helps young adults with Cancer in a truly special way. This organization is great because it leverages whitewater kayaking instruction in a camp setting that encourages bonding, risk taking, and adventure to empower and facilitate healing and growth for the participants.
Every year, this great camp has increased its ability to serve young adults who want to make their lives more about living than just "surviving."
On August 14, I will participate in the Leadville 100 mountain bike race as a member of Team First Descents to help raise funds to increase the levels of service that First Descents can provide. Much of the expansion of the camp has come through the funds raised through rider sponsorship.
The race itself draws 1400 competitors, including cyclists like Lance Armstrong, and covers 104 grueling miles of steep roads and trails. The entire race occurs at altitudes above 9000 feet. This elevation saps most competitors of around 15% of their normal cardiovascular ability making the race all that more difficult.
