In the one minute that you spend reviewing this page, two people have died from cardiac arrest! Heart disease and Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) are the leading causes of death in Americans, killing more people than house fires, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and car accidents combined.
44 for Life is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to decreasing death and disability from life threatening cardiovascular diseases and SCA. Our vision is a world where people don't have to succumb to Cardiovascular Diseases and Sudden Cardiac Arrest. We are the first national nonprofit providing a full range of services dedicated to raising awareness and reaction time to cardiac arrest, including:
- Heart Disease and SCA education, awareness and prevention programs
- Training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, First Aid , and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Use
- Public Access to Defibrillation/Automated External Defibrillator donation
- Youth and Adult Cardiovascular Screening
- Youth Athletic Fitness Programs, and
- Scholarship
By the year 2020, our goal is to ensure that Automated External Defibrillators (AED) are accessible everywhere to all people in the event of cardiac arrest and to create a world where ALL people know life saving skills in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
ABOUT US
In 1990, the Loyola Marymount Lions (Los Angeles, CA) dazzled the country with their outstanding style of basketball—shooting the ball every 4 seconds and setting NCAA records for the highest-scoring basketball games in NCAA Division I history. Leading the team were Hank Gathers (#44) and Bo Kimble—childhood friends since middle school. No one will ever forget March 4, 1990. Within minutes and in front of millions of viewers, Hank collapsed and succumbed to Sudden Cardiac Arrest at the tender age of 23. Seventeen years later, Bo Kimble would encounter the unthinkable. During a New Jersey city league basketball tournament, he witnessed the loss of another victim of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. No one present that day knew cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or had access to life saving cardiovascular equipment (Automated External Defibrillators-AED). Bo quickly learned that Sudden Cardiac Arrest was a leading cause of death in competitive athletes and despite significant medical advances; heart disease was still the leading cause of death among people worldwide. Heart disease was no mystery to Dr. Goode. She lived it first hand with the death of her father who was 44 when he succumbed to a massive heart attack. She knew that familial history was a risk factor of heart disease. All of her father's siblings suffered some form of heart disease; however, little did she know or expect that 4 days after the birth of her son, that she would go into heart failure. It was time to make a difference and join the fight against deadly heart conditions. In the year of our 44th President, Bo Kimble partnered with Dr. Tamara L. Goode to create global change regarding heart disease and it's prevention. The Forty-four (44) for Life Foundation was developed.
