Walk for Health on World Health Day 2013!
We start at 8:00am at Northeasat Plaza Shopping Mall (3307 Buford Highway) and we finish at Plaza Fiesta (4166 Buford Highway)

WHY WALK WITH US?
With close to 1,000,000 Latinos in Georgia, our Latino/Hispanic population in Georgia is a young one and relatively healthy. However, the Georgia Latino Health Report shows that Latinos are at a higher risk to develop cardiovascular diseases and obesity among other health issues.
Adding to those statistics, 2/3 of Latinos in the state lack access to health care, a much higher ration than the national average.
87% of all Latino children under 18 yo are American citizens.
The walk is an initiative to get the community out to walk and incorporate exercise as part of their lives.
The walk is a celebration of life, health and hope for the community in GA.
WHY BUFORD HIGHWAY?
Buford Highway is the most dangerous road for pedestrians in Georgia.
The corridor has a very high concentration of Hispanic and Asian immigrants that are predominantly low-income and can not afford cars or lack driving licenses to get to their work places, doctor appointments or schools.
There are areas in Buford Highway in which there are 6/7 lanes of speeding traffic and crosswalks are a mile apart. Stop lights are even more sporadically placed. There are no sidewalks.
According to a PBS report, 25 percent of pedestrian accidents on Buford Highway involve pedestrians who are hit while trying to catch the bus.
HHCGA understands that transportation is a key factor that impacts not only access to health care to people living around the corridor but also their ability to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
FUNDS RAISED BY TEAMS WILL HELP UNDERWRITE THE OPERATION OF THE EVENT AND PROVIDE SUPPORT TO OUR OBESITY PREVENTION FUND, THROUGH EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE SERVICES AND RESEARCH THROUGH OUR PROMOTORAS NETWORK AND ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR.
