THE STORY:

I'm running for the Red Cross in honor of Liya Gokhin, my wife's mother who died unexpectedly at age 50 after having a heart attack at work. I chose to support the Red Cross because this year they'll train over 9 million people in lifesaving skills, including CPR.

In 2007, I'd been with my girlfriend (now my wife) Simona for 2 years and had already gotten to love her mother Liya. Liya and her family moved to the U.S. from the Soviet Union in the early 1980s; she built her career and raised her family in New Jersey. At the age of 50, with the kids out of the house, she was enjoying traveling the world with her husband Yuri.

On a normal Tuesday morning at her office, she suffered a massive heart attack. Paramedics were called, but they took time to find her in the office building. Though she made it to the hospital, she had already suffered irreversible brain damage from the lack of oxygen. Liya died three days later.

We were devastated to lose her so young and so unexpectedly. It's hard to take lessons away from it. For me, I felt very strongly that I should get my CPR certification, so that I would know what to do in an emergency.

One of the first things I learned during the certification class was that brain damage is possible after just 4 minutes without oxygen, and is probable after 6 minutes. Seconds literally count.

I renewed my certification last October, which only took a few hours of my time. It now can be done partly online and partly in person with the talented Red Cross Staff. It's such a small price to pay to be prepared and confident in an emergency.

Many people think of the Red Cross for the incredible work they do for the victims of disasters worldwide, most recently Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. But their work extends to emergencies of all sizes. The American Red Cross of Massachusetts are on-scene daily for disasters like house fires. On March 26th, they responded to a blizzard and 14 fires in a single day, including the Back Bay fire that claimed two firefighters’ lives.

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts also provides medical services every year at the Boston Marathon, staffing the medical tents along the course and at the finish. They were first responders during the bombings last year and moved quickly to organize relief efforts. And they are committed to providing mental health services that victims will need for years to come.

I'm honored to be running my first marathon since 2007, and my first Boston Marathon ever, to support the Red Cross. Please contribute to help keep this organization strong.

Funds raised by Team Red Cross 2014 participants will benefit American Red Cross of Massachusetts programs and services. For more information about the American Red Cross response, visit http://www.redcross.org/ma/boston/boston-marathon-2013.
