THE STORY:

Running has been an integral piece of my life for years.  Not only has it been an outlet for stress and a way to stay in shape, but it has become a part of how I define myself.  I am a runner.

Last spring, I ran the Paris marathon and thought to myself that perhaps this would be my last.  I had accomplished this act many times, the trianing can be grueling, and I now had a son to keep my occupied. It might be time to explore new interests.  One week later, I sat in our apartment in Boston horrified as bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston marathon.  The event that defined so much of my sport and my passion had been ruined by seemingly random acts.  I realized I couldn't let this happen and, certainly, Paris would not be my last marathon.

In the aftermath of the bombings, we hosted two shaken runners in our home as they tried to make their way to the airport and eventually back to their homes in California.  I spent days at home as my office was on Bolyston Street and could not reopen as it was part of the crime scene.  Alex and I also hunkered down in our home when the suspects were found and the city went on lockdown for a day.  Evenutally, we could leave our homes, and I tried to find some comfort in my good friend, the run.  But, every time I went for a run, I would run across Boylston Street where the media had set up camp and an impromptu memorial had been set up on my way to the river.  It was hard to forget and somehow, through all that had happened, the seemingly random acts felt very personal.

I know the bombing had nothing to do with me, and there were many more people that were far more impacted and hurt.  But, in some way I belive those bombs were meant to hurt me, they were meant to make me scared to make me stop, to change the way I do things--that's what terrorism is about.  I decided that I wanted to stand up against had happened.  I wanted to prove that Boston is strong and runners are strong and I am strong.  I decided I would run the Boston marathon in April to show my defiance.

Not only would I run, but I would run for good and I would run for a charity that also defied the bombings.  I wanted to run for the Red Cross because as I sat on my couch last April and watched clip after clip of the bombings, I saw brave Red Cross volunteers running into the bombs to save people's lives.  They weren't afraid--rather they stood up for the good and and innocent that day.  Those first responders set a tone of inspriration rather than defeat, and I am proud to be representing those fearless individuals this year.

If you have ever wondered how you can make a difference for Boston, for runners, or just to defy those random acts then please join me in supporting the Red Cross.  Your donation can truly make a difference in events like these.  Please support me in the 2014 Boston marathon.

With sincere thanks,

Chris

PS for those of you wondering...yes, I am due with our second son at the end April. This  certainly complicates the picture a bit.  But, I made a promise to myself and unless I am in the hospital delivering, I will be at the starting line of the 2014 Boston marathon.
