EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014

DAYS TO GO: 3

THE STORY:

On April 21st I will put on my trainers and run the Boston Marathon for the American Red Cross. Last year I was at the Boston Marathon on that fateful day of the blast. Most of the runners at the time of the explosion that day were not elite athletes. They were people like you and me, running with enthusiasm and tired legs . The deaths and injuries were tragic and heart-wrenching. Within minutes of the blast, the American Red Cross of Massachusetts responded by helping the runners and supporters, and then assisting the first responders navigate the chaos. In the weeks and months that have followed, Red Cross staff and volunteers tirelessly provided food, shelter, financial support and mental health services to those affected, in addition to their outstanding ongoing work in the communities that they serve.  I have come to know the team at the Red Cross of Massachusetts very well over the last year and I have chosen to support their work by running this marathon as part of their group.

This is going to be the challenge of my life. As many of you know I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. It knocked me mentally as well as physically, but with the amazing support from family and friends I got through it. I have not forgotten what I went through, and how thankful I am for the support I received, and now is my time to give back by running this marathon and supporting the community I now call “home”. I will chronicle my training--no long blogs-- but maybe a few paragraphs and photos of training in sub-zero temperatures. If you sponsor me in this effort, you will be with me at every step, and your initials will be on my tee-shirt. My goal is to cover every square inch of it!

Team Red Cross is honored to be an official charity team of the 118th Boston Marathon® and the 2014 John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Program.

On April 21, 2014, Team Red Cross will run 26.2 miles to raise funds to continue our mission to alleviate human suffering in the face of disaster.  We will run for those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath. And we will finish, Boston Strong.

Since 2012, Team Red Cross has raised more than $260,000 to support Red Cross programs and services.  With every mile run and every dollar raised, Team Red Cross runners help to save and transform the lives of those in their greatest time of need. Team Red Cross brings together runners of all ages and abilities in support of the Red Cross mission, from first time marathoners to experienced competitors.

The American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need. Our network of generous donors, volunteers and employees share a mission of preventing and relieving suffering, here at home and around the world, through five key service areas: disaster relief, supporting America’s military families, supplying lifesaving blood, health and safety services, and international services.

Funds raised by Team Red Cross 2014 participants will benefit American Red Cross of Massachusetts programs and services. The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is one of the largest Red Cross chapters in the nation. We stand ready to assist the citizens of our Commonwealth in times of disaster to meet emergency needs; to alleviate hunger; to make ours a more resilient Massachusetts, and to educate our next generation in preparedness, health, safety and aquatics.

Special thanks to Dan Fitzgerald, Heartbreak Hill Running Company and South End Athletic Company for providing coaching and training for Team Red Cross runners.
