An extreme event to highlight an extreme cause!

Every day, women and children have to walk for up to 4 hours to retrieve water, taking valuable time away from earning an income or receiving an education. Often, this water is unsafe to drink leading to sickness, disease, and even death. In fact, over 80% of diseases in the developing world are related to poor drinking water and sanitation. As a result, 1 child dies every 15 seconds due to a water-related illness.

We can make a difference! On June 29, 2010, I will be returning to Death Valley National Park with a group of young people to conduct a 15-mile walk-a-thon in the desert! We've chosen to walk 15 miles to raise awareness of the fact that a child dies every 15 seconds due to a totally preventable water-related illness. We will begin at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in the western hemisphere and one of the hottest places on earth. We will walk 15 miles on Badwater Road, toward Furnace Creek, in extreme temperatures, in order to bring clean water to sub-Saharan Africa. And, as a true water walk, we will each carry a container of water to serve as a reminder that "We're walking so they won't have to."

The last time we were there, back in 2007, the temperature reached a high of 121 degrees! It was tough, we were all exhausted when it was over, and I heard someone say, "I'm so glad I was a part of this event, but I never want to see this place again!" ... We raised enough money in 2007 to provide three new wells in Kenya. Since that time, we have continued to fund clean water solutions in several African nations. ...

So, why are we going back? The answer should be obvious. People still don't have access to clean water. And that's not right. It's not a matter of charity, it's a matter of justice. And we can do something about it.
