THE STORY:

Join me and IUCN in helping to protect the ~50% of our planet that great whales, sea turtles, sharks, and other amazing creatures call home.

What are the High Seas?  Well, they are the part of the ocean that is outside the control of just one country, and are a treasure trove of marine life.  Tiny marine plants called phytoplankton found in the high seas produce nearly 50% of the oxygen we breathe, and the high seas might be the largest reservoir of undisturbed biodiversity left on earth. Entire worlds are thriving thousands of feet beneath the surface, full of lifeforms wilder than we could possibly imagine, most of which no human eye has ever seen. It's pretty incredible when you think about it.

The high seas are in major trouble, however.  Overfishing, seabed mining, ocean warming and acidification, chemical and noise pollution, plastic waste, ship traffic, and destructive practices like bottom trawling are destroying this blue part of our planet. At this rate, there won't be a single piece of our planet without a heavy human footprint on it. And some things, like coral that's taken millennia to grow and ten seconds to be destroyed by deep sea mining, cannot simply be replaced overnight. We need to be proactive and save this beautiful, magical, environmentally and intrinsically rich natural resource we have, before it is too late.

Without good laws in place to protect these vast and deep waters, they might be destroyed. As it stands now, there is no overarching policy to conserve these waters. They are barely protected- in some cases, not at all. The High Seas are a silent victim of human-caused impacts, but the good news is, we can DO something!

IUCN and the High Seas Alliance are calling on governments at the United Nations to act now and support a new treaty to protect the high seas. The treaty will provide international rules that protect marine wildlife.  I want to lend my voice to the high seas, along with others like James Cameron, Richard Branson and, hopefully, YOU!

Join my #STARTARYOT campaign today and help me raise more money than ever before for the High Seas and IUCN’s conservation work around the world.
