UPDATE: So happy that Susan G. Komen has relented and will let Planned Parenthood keep their funding (for now). But after the week's events and revelations, I am very glad to be supporting Planned Parenthood directly!

Like many people, I was shocked that the Susan G. Koman Fund (to which I have donated in the past) pulled funding for cancer detection services from Planned Parenthood.
I believe that all women should have access to healthcare. Yet poor women are more likely to die from breast cancer due to limited access to screening and treatment: I am glad that Planned Parenthood has been there for women in my community who don't have insurance and can't afford annual exams and cancer screenings. 90% of the services provided by Planned Parenthood of Southern New England are preventative, including almost 35,000 breast and cervical cancer screenings each year.
So I will be running the New York City Half Marathon to support Planned Parenthood's work in my community, and I set up this fundraising page in case anyone wants to help. I know $38,000 is a ridiculously unattainable goal, but this represents the amount of a Komen grant that Planned Parenthood received last year for the the Bridgeport Breast Cancer Early Detection Program. The grant was awarded because of the Bridgeport area's high concentration of stage IV diagnosis for breast cancer. It would be a shame to see these critical early detection services discontinued.
