The only thing more terrifying than having your child diagnosed with a life-threatening disease is for them to be diagnosed with the very disease that your own father passed away from at the early age of 37. I am Amyjo, I run for the cure to diabetes, and I am Annalise's Mom.
With our stay at Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) an organization called PADRE (Pediatric Adolescent Diabetes Research Education) seamlessly coordinated tools and education for us to effectively manage this lifelong journey. Meters, test strips, syringes, ketosticks, glucagon, insulin, carbohydrate counting, meal planning...the list is endless. To be honest, PADRE did SUCH a great job I thought it was part of CHOCs care!
I hear time and time again how many families are sent home after their child's diagnosis with not much more than a meter. PADRE ensures that this doesn't happen. You can find a ton of information on the internet but nothing can replace real people giving you real information on how to keep your child well while we wait for the cure to be found.
Thank you John and Mary Haretakis, the founders of PADRE. Because of you we don't have to endure what you did, a diagnosis with little else!
