I'm running in the Brooklyn Half Marathon on May 19th to raise money so that Apple Arts can stay open through the summer!
Apple Arts NYC is a non-profit that provides free arts education classes to children living in homeless shelters in New York City. I’ve been volunteering with program for two years and am a proud member of their Junior Board. I spend every Tuesday evening with these children during Apple Arts and it is consistently my favorite part of the week! (Check out pictures of our projects.)
I often think of what great summers I was lucky enough to have growing up and want to share some of those experiences with these children. For the kids at Apple Arts, summer months can mean more unstructured time and less adult attention. With no school, no camp and parents who are in crisis, many of the Apple Arts youth face boredom and negative temptation during those long summer days. Often, this leads to dangerous and unproductive activities.
Wouldn't it be great to be able to take a group to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, visit the beach, tour the aquarium, or go berry picking? Just last week in Apple Arts the kids designed their own kites. You would have never known that the kites barely made it off the ground with how thrilled the kids were! I can just imagine their excitement if we could take them to Central Park with real kites. This is my new summer fantasy.
Please help Apple Arts reach our goal of $12,000 to provide summer programming! I am hoping that with the help of my family and friends I will be able to raise $1,500. I will be thinking of the children we help every step of the half-marathon and would be so grateful for your support!
