Pick up trash - Record your Data - Be Part of the Solution
LEGACY: Beach Sweeps are more than picking up trash, they are about collecting data. Volunteers record each piece of debris on data cards. While challenging, it is essential to the success of the program. It ensures that the volunteers' good work becomes a legacy of information to help reduce marine litter. The data is used in an annual report that provides evidence to reduce litter, serves to educate the public and drives efforts to combat marine pollution.
HISTORY: Clean Ocean Action's Beach Sweeps started in 1985 with 75 volunteers. Since then over 90,000 citizens, the small and the tall, removed over 4.5 million pieces of trash.
HOW:
- Pick a site from the list.
- Pre-register groups of 10 or more through cleanoceanaction.org, smaller groups can simply show up at their chosen location and check in with the Beach Captain
- Check in starts at 9:00am on April 27th, RAIN OR SHINE
- Bring gloves, wear hard-soled shoes, dress for the weather, stay off dunes and always respect wildlife.
