Hi Bill - Pasting in my log from that fateful day of April 16th. Thanks again,
Chris

I was getting more confident (cocky?) with every group long run that I did, especially after the 21 miler. I really thought I could sustain a sub 10mpm pace, but the heat put me in my place – I should have gone even slower. I don’t think that for any of the long runs the temperature went over 60, never mind making it to 87. Unless you’ve been training in it for at least ten days, your blood goes to cooling off your skin instead of replenishing your muscles, and you’re apt to cram up, which I normally never do, but did on Monday.

I cramped up, my back got sore, and with three miles to go I started feeling light-headed. This last issue concerned me, so that’s when I checked into a Red Cross tent for a long time before walking most of the way to the finish. I had hoped to finish in under 4:30, but ended up finishing in 6:20.

From the race I’m remembering images of people cramping up on the side of the road, laying on stretchers, and puking because their stomachs were cramped up and they couldn’t keep fluid down. And then there was this guy running with no pants…..

But then there were more positive images of the beauty of Hopkinton & Ashland, the “women of Wellesley”, Teddy Bruski pulling up beside me to give me encouragement, and the cheering section that turned out for Team Eye & Ear.

I’ve learned that the greater Boston running community is made up of some of the most kind and generous people that I’ve ever met. And I’ve also learned that the staff of the Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary, many of whom have been Team Eye & Ear members over the years, are truly committed to their hospital, and that my kids are blessed to be in their care.

Thank you so much Bill!! Beca…
Thank you so much Bill!! Because of my kids' ongoing battle with RP, Mass Eye & Ear has been close to my heart, and it's gratifying to finally be able to do this for them.

Back on March 24th I was able to complete the 20.7 mile run from Framingham without bonking and with no blisters. On that particular day, I was confident that I could have covered another 5.5 miles. I hope that's how I feel on April 16th.

Thanks again Bill very much.
