Every child needs books, yet 60% of underpriveleged children do not own a single book. Hundreds of families go through the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance offices every day, with thousands of people waiting anywhere from 1 to 6 hours. Reader to Reader's "Read While U Wait" program provides a room where chidren can play and be read to while they wait with their parents for either emergency housing or financial assistance with food.
Each child and parent becomes the proud owner of a new book, which they can start their own libraries with whether they are heading to a homeless shelter or to their own homes. Quite often, this is the first book these children can call their own.
The Room was started 11 years ago by Lisa Heyison with the assistance of several Boston nonprofits, and has recently become a part of the Reader to Reader family. Please support our efforts to bring vulnerable children in transition the joy of reading!
