CROWDRISING SINCE: Nov 08, 2011
Stuff About Me:

My name is Briana Evigan. I was a student at Marymount College and then LA Valley City College where I found the speech and debate team. The speech team is what influenced me to become an actress. I started my life off as a dancer and landed the lead role in 'Step Up 2 The Streets' right when I completed the speech program.

I have always had it in me to want to help people and be involved with charity work. A few months ago my good friend Michaela Kozena brought up to me getting involved with a non-profit organization. I had just met a friend Derek Jameson who asked me to be involved in a human trafficking PSA video. I said yes. Michaela had told me about the Somaly Mam Foundation and after doing some research I became very interested in being a part of the team. I was then linked up with Jessica Diep who is the LA ambassador of SMF and together we have been collaborating ideas and ways to raise awareness and funds for these children and women that Somaly has rescued. Somaly is hands down the bravest woman I have ever read about and I can't wait to meet her this year. She is so inspiring, I hope everyone out there can see what this woman has achieved. If you haven't read her book 'The Road of Lost Innocence', buy it! It's incredible. Let's all spread the word and keep our minds open for ways to help starting now.

Help me end modern slavery.

1. DONATE TO MY CROWDRISE FUNDRAISER

  • $25 helps provide young survivors with computer training.
  • $30 is a gift of health to a young survivor - a crucial exam and blood test for a girl rescued.
  • $120 helps provide a survivor with a year’s worth of specialized training in weaving, sewing, or other vocational skills that will help her get a job and stay employed.
  • $360 per year will help keep rescued girls safe from violent offenders. Shelters are under constant threat from organized crime syndicates that run the brothels, and pimps who want to re-enslave the rescued girls. This donation covers a shelter’s security fees for one year per girl, and allows the girls to rebuild their lives in a secure, loving environment.
  • $500 provides a survivor with everything she needs to start her own business, including supplies and materials.
  • $1,000 pays the annual salary of a psychologist to provide counseling and rehabilitation to girls at a shelter in Southeast Asia. Removing a child from a brothel is not a solution in and of itself; your donation will provide the support survivors need to embark on the long and painful journey ahead.
  • $12,000 funds the annual salary of a full-time doctor who can provide regular medical treatment to survivors and help them heal the wounds of their victimization.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING:

Individuals are promised jobs in another country, and when they arrive find that they must labor endless hours for no pay. Schoolgirls are coerced into sexual slavery by pimps posing as caring boyfriends. Women and children are sold to brothels, and threatened with violence or death if they try to escape.

This is 21st century slavery.

Human trafficking is perpetrated in every country, rich or poor. It is the second largest, fastest growing organized crime in the world. Free the Slaves estimates that there are currently 27 million people toiling as modern day slaves around the globe.

In this global crisis, children as young as four years old may be sold for as little as $100 dollars and forced to service up to 30 clients a day. According to UNICEF, as many as 2 million children are subjected to prostitution in the global commercial sex trade. The average age of first exploitation through prostitution is only 13. At least 100,000 of these children are in the United States.

PLEASE take a few minutes of your time and watch the embedded videos above.

THE SOMALY MAM FOUNDATION:

The Somaly Mam Foundation is a nonprofit 501c(3) organization dedicated to the eradication of slavery worldwide, with a special focus on Southeast Asia where the trafficking of women and girls is widespread. SMF supports survivor rescue, shelter, and restoration programs (including medical and psychological treatment), as well as empowerment programs that train survivors of slavery to be a force of change in their community. SMF's awareness and advocacy campaigns shed light on the crime of human trafficking and involve governments and individuals in the fight against modern-day slavery.
