EVENT: Groupon Earth Day Challenge

EVENT DATE: Apr 16, 2012

THE STORY:

With Crowdrise you can help us do more to build better St. Louis communities! We've tipped our Groupon Grassroots Campaign, and now we're looking to do more for St. Louis neighborhoods.

100% of donations received by Gateway Greening will go towards community garden development. Donations support community gardens in underserved areas of city, providing access to fresh produce & enjoyable exercise.

THE ISSUE: INACCESSIBILITY OF FRESH PRODUCE AND OTHER HEALTHY FOOD
In the city of St. Louis and north St. Louis County, more than 75% of residents reported consuming fewer than five servings of fruit and vegetables per day—due in part to living in underserved, critical food-access areas. Citizen-managed community gardens provide residents with access to the freshest possible food, control of their health, and are stress-reducing form of exercise.

THE CAMPAIGN: BUILD COMMUNITY GARDENS
If this Grassroots campaign raises $620 through Groupon, then Gateway Greening can purchase the lumber and soil to build 10 raised 4'x12' garden beds (a $61.21 value each) for a community garden in the St. Louis area. Staff members and volunteers will work alongside community partners, supplying labor, plant materials, and necessary tools, as well as advice throughout the life of the garden. Each additional $62 raised will go toward purchasing lumber and soil for another raised garden bed.

To celebrate the launch of Groupon Grassroots, Groupon will provide a $1,000 kickoff grant to this campaign.

GAETWAY GREENING
Gateway Greening collaborates with nonprofit organizations, schools, and other key partners to revitalize public space and develop food-producing gardens as part of an effort to create vibrant, healthy communities. Through the Community Garden program, staff and volunteers support more than 200 gardens, providing necessary plant materials, soil, and tools, as well as training gardeners and helping maintain the plots throughout the seasons.

Other key Gateway Greening programs include urban greening projects that help to beautify neighborhoods and encourage better land use among residents. The City Seeds Urban Farm provides job training to individuals experiencing homelessness and distributes fresh, locally grown produce to nearby food pantries. Also, youth gardens supported by Gateway Greening dot the grounds of more than 60 local schools.
