HERE'S THE STORY:
I'm not sure who is pictured here on the Campbell Bridge. They could be a Santa Barbara Botanic Garden class studying watersheds, they could be tourists from New England or New South Wales. But whoever they are, they couldn't be standing on the Bridge right now, because the historic bridge, linking both sides of Mission Canyon burned completely in the Jesusita fire, just over two years ago. Children can no longer stand here above the water, marvelling at the enormous Lassiter boulder, scanning the surface for tiny water striders, peering under the handrails for exoskeletons.
Because it all burned! Fire recovery was almost instantaneous: stumps sprouted, hiding their charred, gnarled bases; seeds broke through ashes, wildflowers rejoiced in the summer sun; vines sprang upwards; oaks unfurled new leaves.
Bridges to the past were gradually repaired. Misunderstandings, miscommunications, hard words and hard feelings faded as the Garden re-grew, and a lot of folks realized it's time to rebuild bridges, and indeed, build a new bridge, too. A bridge to the future, connecting the best of our past to the bright future we want for ourselves, our children and all the children to come.
We’ve got the architectural plans and the permits. Now we need to build that bridge, and we need your help. We are asking as many people as we know to make a gift of any size so we can have this bridge in place by December 31, 2012.
