WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:
Like many women, I was excited to become a mother and enjoyed being pregnant. But just after delivering my first child, I suffered a serious complication. While I had a birth team that managed the situation, I was shocked to learn that the same complication was the leading cause of death for tens of thousands of women and that 360,000 women die each year as a result of pregnany-related causes. But, almost all of these deaths are preventable and that was what inspired me learn all i could about the global state of maternal health.
In the summer of 2008, I began working on a documentary film profiling that examined the barriers to woman accessing critical care. NO WOMAN, NO CRY follows the stories of at-risk pregnant women in four parts of the world, including a remote Maasai tribe in Tanzania, a slum of Bangladesh, a post-abortion care ward in Guatemala, and a prenatal clinic in the United States. NO WOMAN, NO CRY made its world premiere at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City and its US television broadcast premiere this past Mother's Day on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
Concurrent with the debut of NO WOMAN, NO CRY, I founded Every Mother Counts, an advocacy and mobilization campaign to increase education and support for maternal, newborn and child health. Every Mother Counts seeks to engage new audiences to better understand the challenges and the solutions while encouraging them to take action to improve the lives of families worldwide through the improved health of girls and women.
The keystone of the campaign is www.everymothercounts.org, an interactive platform providing the tools to raise awareness, education and action.
This year, I'm excited to be running my first ING New York City Marathon with the Every Mother Counts team.

I am so cliche, but you are such an inspiration to me. Reading about you and your accomplishments makes me want to be the best I can be. I am in total awe of how fabulous you are in every conceivable way. When I am older and have my business/psychology degrees, I would love to lend you my services. Feminism is the most important cause to me and to be able to not only help advance the cause but work with someone who I think of every time I want to accomplish something/better my life would be an honor.
