After returning from South Sudan April 5th for my sixth year, I am excited to see how the newest country in the world is now free from oppression and able to start self rule. As the co-founder/Exec. Director of PES and witnessing the 3,000 children we are making a difference for continues to be the most rewarding experience. Project Education Sudan was approached by two mountain climbers, Joe Rogers and Nick Spivey who were inspired by the “Lost Boys” of Sudan thousand mile journey across three countries.  Joe and Nick are lifetime friends who wanted to climb together this summer like they did back in Alaska when they were roommates in college.  They wanted to make their climb bigger than just two guys hanging out together so they are dedicating their effort to the “Lost Boys” of Sudan and the people of Sudan. At Project Education Sudan we said “Wait a minute – aren’t we all climbers?”  To climb is to reach for something greater than ourselves, to rise up, to ascend.  It all started to become clear.  The people of South Sudan are climbers.  The “Lost Boys” are climbers.  Our volunteers and people who help us build schools in Sudan are climbers.  Our donors are climbers.  The school children and families here in Colorado who reach out with their letters and pictures to children and families in Sudan are climbers too.  With that realization the Climb for Sudan was born. Please visit www.climbforsudan.org for information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Personal Mission Statement: I have chosen to work for this organization for a very special reason.  For several years, I have been closely connected with a Southern Sudanese family living in North Carolina (comprised of Moses and Salma who in their late 20s and their four adorable young sons). (SEE 2nd ROW OF PHOTOS AT LEFT!) They have been refugees in the United States for almost five years and are hardworking, passionate people.  Their immensely moving stories regarding life in Sudan have impacted me so greatly that since knowing them, I have been dedicated to doing all I can to help create positive change in their home country. Their journey has become my inspiration........   I have been interning with Project Education Sudan since September 2010! I have been working on the development of a GIRLS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM at the all-girls primary school, Ayak Anguei, in Konbek (Southern Sudan). Let me tell you something awesome.... Carol (ED of PES) just got back from Sudan with 75 surveys that the girls at Ayak took sharing with us their thoughts, feelings & hopes for themselves and their lives!  What I love most about PES is its CENTRAL FOCUS on COMMUNITY COLLABORATION. We are not a "hand-out" organization. We work WITH the villages to enable them to learn and live sustainably. We do not continue our work without their help!  Change must always come from within, and we are working to grant these amazing villages the tools to produce that change themselves. Southern Sudan is in the midst of enormous changes while becoming its own country.  Amidst the challenges to come, there is HOPE!   Please join me in supporting an organization that is fully committed to the education of the children of Southern Sudan.  They are the ones who will be running this new country...and with your support, they can have an abundance of opportunities toward positive growth. I believe in the POTENTIAL of these incredibly motivated and strong children and young adults. They already have everything within them to succeed, but simply need a way to bring it out. I was born and grew up in Sudan. At age 14 I left and was not able to return until I went with Project Education Sudan in 2006. Now I'm working-with PES-to help South Sudanese leaders build schools in their villages. The Sudanese have a passion for education, but decades of civil war have decimated the country's school system and it's buildings. Many hold classes under trees when it's not raining. Now is their chance! The peace accord of 2005, and the overwealming vote to form a new country (elections held in January of 2011) is offering the opportunity to rebuild.  Some of the "Lost Boys", displaced by the war came to the US ten years ago. Now we are helping them reconnect with their families and together build schools. We are helping them drill wells for clean drinking water and we are supplying grinding mills to the PTAs, so young girls can go to school, instead of stay at home to grind grain. The excitement in the villages where we have friends and partners is huge! Hide

Since my return from serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, I have gotten very involved with an amazing organization called Project Education Sudan (PES). Money raised through Climb for Sudan will directly benefit PES' work with community leaders and village elders in South Sudan to help them build, staff, train, and supply primary and secondary schools, as well as to provide adult education and community-based leadership development training. By emphasizing the inclusion of girls and women, PES is investing in the local Sudanese people to empower and mentor them to create positive change in their own lives. Climb for Sudan is a partnership between Project Education Sudan and two individuals, Joe Rogers and Nick Spivey. Like the challenge of this climb, Project Education Sudan has materialized out of a desire from Americans and “Lost Boys” living in the United States to better the lives of the people of South Sudan. We are striving to generate further awareness about the emerging country of South Sudan and the dire need to help build an educational infrastructure. Money raised during the Climb for Sudan will fund much needed teacher trainings, leadership development, classrooms, dormitories, bunk beds and desks for schools in three rural villages in Jonglei state. Climb for Sudan is an adventure that will take these two individuals to the summits of all of Colorado’s 14,000 foot mountains in an attempt to raise money and awareness for Project Education Sudan. I am so excited about this event -- raising money to build schools in South Sudan (www.projecteducationsudan.org does amazing work!). All that I raise here will go towards creating educational infrastructure in several South Sudan villages - these are villages that were destroyed during the 20 year civil war in Sudan. Now that they are about to become an independent nation (July 9th !), they have hope again for a brighter future, and we can help. Please donate by clicking on the big orange button that says donate! Seriously, all kids deserve an education, right? And without our help, most of these kids will not enjoy this basic right. So please donate what you can.
