Daraja (means bridge in Swahili) is 4 hours NW of Nairobi, Kenya.
Regina Lerosion is a sophomore student at Daraja Academy. http://daraja-academy.org/
Regina's family lost their income when Kenya had a long drought. Their livestock, which is their savings, died due to lack of water. Although Regina was competitive academically, there was no way she could afford high school. It costs about $500.00 to go to high school in Kenya. Students have to pay for tuition, as well as school supplies and uniforms. The dropout rate from elementary school to high school is 80%. Regina's life path was set to make her another statistic. Fortunately, Regina received a four year scholarship from Daraja Academy. This allowed her to continue onto secondary school - a fate that is not very usual for girls of her tribe.
Women's education was the single most important factor behind falling levels of hunger & malnutrition in the developing world according to a 30-year study. (The US Institute of Food & Nutrition)
We'll be running/walking together on different continents!
Remember, if you don't give back, no one will like you...just kidding, but seriously, just think how good you'll feel!!!
