STUFF ABOUT ME:

I never thought I'd run a marathon. Some days I'm still not sure I'm going to finish it (at least not in the upright position). But something about the idea of running for this organization and this issue I've come to care so deeply about can make one agree to do some crazy things.

Global development has always been near and dear to my heart. Friends from my small rural hometown thought I was a bit strange to be as interested in African politics and culture even as a teenager. But I felt a calling, followed it and felt incredibly lucky to find a place working with an incredible group of people and raising awareness about all the interrelated issues that cause and perpetuate global poverty.

Along the way I got married and had kids. And suddenly things got a lot clearer to me. On every international trip, I spent a lot more time focused on the babies but also on the moms. No matter how I tried to stay focused on the 'issue at hand'- it all came back to the moms. A healthy mom who survives childbirth is going to have healthier kids, those kids are going to be more likely to go to school, her daughters are going to be less likely to marry to early herself, her family will be more likely to eat as she's the main agricultural producer and let's face it- these countries with women in office are being run better as well!

When I met Christy in early 2010 and saw her powerful film No Woman, No Cry I jumped at the chance to help her build Every Mother Counts. It's not only strategic in my mind and the way to address so many of these development challenges but it's personal. I'd been blessed with two perfect children. My first child was breech and I had the luxury of bemoaning the fact that I had to have a c-section instead of thinking how lucky I was to GET to have a c-section when it was needed. I'm so lucky. In so many ways. And one way I'm lucky is that I get the chance to give back.

So here we are. Trying to run 26 miles as a way to raise awareness and funds to address global maternal and child health. I can assure you this was not in the job description when I signed on. But just as it's an honor to get to work on these issues every day, it's an honor to find ways that I can give of myself as well. As I run I'll be thinking of the women I've met along the way who don’t get to see a doctor when they need one, who don’t have access to family planning to get to choose when they have their children, who may have to trudge 5 miles or more to see a provider while 9 months pregnant. And OCCASIONALLY I'll also be thinking 'how far to the next water stop?'
