ORGANIZER: Somaly Mam Foundation
EVENT DATE: Feb 28, 2012
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Jun 01, 2012
AMOUNT RAISED OFFLINE: $12,850.00
HERE'S THE STORY:
Dear Loved Ones,
Many of you know that Somaly Mam’s Foundation and her inspiring work have been very close to my heart ever since I first read her book over a year ago. Experiencing Somaly’s fate as a child sex slave through her eyes was life-changing. We just cannot accept that we live in a world in which girls as young as 4 years old are sold for as little as $5, forced to endure repeated rapings, beatings, and unimaginable brutality.
After passing the book on to my roommates, Jackie & Margot, who were equally affected, we decided to take action and 50G was born (www.crowdrise.com/50G). With the many generous people in our lives we were able to raise a considerable amount of awareness as well as funds for the Somaly Mam Foundation which since its inception has helped save over 7,000 girls.
I am now ready to take the next step and to visit Somaly’s shelters in Cambodia during a 10-day bike ride of 500km (310 miles) throughout the country starting Feb 28, 2012. Seeing her work first-hand, meeting the girls and witnessing the evil aftermaths of human trafficking will likely be just as painful of an experience as it will be an empowering and encouraging one.
- In order to become eligible for this trip I need to raise a total of $5,500 for the Somaly Mam Foundation -
Your donations will go a long way in putting an end to these girls’ suffering and providing them with a life that every human being deserves. And remember, everything you give is 100% tax deductible.
Here are some examples of what your generosity would enable:
$25 --- Helps provide computer training for a 5-18 yr old survivor at shelters in Southeast Asia
$120 --- Helps provide a survivor with a year’s worth of specialized training in weaving, sewing, salon, or other vocational skills that will help her get a job and stay employed
$1,000 --- Will pay a psychologist's annual salary for counseling and rehabilitation - one of the most important factors ensuring a healthy future and a new start
PLEASE HELP END THE SUFFERING. Let's make our sisters whole again.
Anything you would be willing to contribute to this cause would mean the world to me and most importantly to the girls.
If a monetary donation is not an option for you right now – I would be endlessly thankful if you could look at the embedded video clip on the left-hand side and spread the word about these atrocities. After all, awareness is such a crucial part in this fight.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for reading this, for caring.
Love, Gesche
