THE STORY:

Timber builds houses, but forests keep us alive.

Cut too many trees, and the forest dies.

If the forest dies, so does our economy, and so do we.

It’s a cycle of progress and destruction as old as the markets of Mesopotamia -- and we all know where they ended up.

But we can stop the cycle, and we can do so while strengthening the economic engine that has lifted millions of people out of poverty.

How? Simple: by incorporate the value of nature’s services into our economy.

Here's an example: a healthy forest filters our water, waters our clouds, and feeds our soil. It also captures carbon in trees, thus slowing and maybe even reversing the effects of climate change. All of these are ecosystem services that nature delivers for free, and everything we buy, sell, eat, and breathe ultimately depends on them. Because they’re free, however, we use them up until they’re gone. And once they're gone, the price of everything else goes up, too.

Forest Trends was conceived by foresters, economists, and environmentalists from across the political spectrum. We all share one aim: to end this cycle by exploring and testing new financing mechanisms that embed the cost of degradation into the cost of production -- creating in the process an economic incentive to preserve and maintain our planets living ecosystems rather than simply to harvest them.

Recently, for example, we helped the Paiter-Surui of the Brazilian Amazon earn carbon credits by saving their rainforest. This effort took five years and required the coordination of several of our initiatives working together, and is just one of scores of projects you'll find by visiting our various initiatives.

Our Ecosystem Marketplace is the world’s leading source of news and research into payments for ecosystem services. In addition to daily news and features, it creates major reports and surveys on the state of ecosystem markets around the world

Our Forest Carbon Portal tracks news and finance for forest and land use carbon projects.

Our REDDX initiative keeps track on public-sector financing of forest-carbon programs around the world.

Our Valorando Naturaleza initiative provides coverage of Latin America.

Our Watershed Connect initiative keeps track of programs that promote good stewardship of waterbodies

SpeciesBanking.com keeps track of programs that preserve and restore habitat of endangered species.

Our Business and Biodiversity Offsets Program (BBOP) works with green-minded companies interested in offsetting their biodiversity impacts.

The Katoomba Incubator works with local people and indigenous groups around the world to develop programs that can be replicated elsewhere.

Our Forest Trade and Finance initiative shines the bright light of transparency on the global timber trade.

Our Community Portal inititiative works with communities interested in learning how markets can work for them.

It’s because of these and other activities that the Skoll Foundation invited us to participate in the largest CrowdRise campaign of all time. It began on September 30 and runs to November 22, and our aim is to raise just $45,000. That little bit can help us dramatically expand our coverage of emerging programs and mechanisms.
