Conservation International wrote -
Over the past several decades the burning of tropical forests has contributed over 16% of global CO2 emissions. That is more than all of the world’s cars, trucks, ships and planes. It is more than all of the coal plants in the United States and China.Eliminating deforestation would reduce annual CO2 emissions by 7 billion tons. Phrased differently, protecting tropical forests can offset CO2 emissions of countries like the United States and China OR all of the world’s cars, trucks, ships and planes combined.
CI has led the effort to make forest protection central to global climate solutions. For instance, CI has provided strategic scientific counsel on a monumental agreement signed between Norway and Guyana in 2009.
What is exciting is that a number of nations including Liberia, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Indonesia, are prepared for similar agreements – giving us all a chance to escape severe consequences of global warming.
