BENEFITING: HUMAN TRAFFICKING AWARENESS COUNCIL INC
Every year approximately 900,000 people are forced into slavery through the crime of human trafficking. In the US alone up to 300,000 Americans are forced into this situation; half of them are children, and many are never rescued or found again. This is an issue that can be prevented by teaching citizens about the crime and offering ways for them to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their communities.
Starting January 23, 2012 we will be going across the US to speak to high schools, universities, and communities about the issues of human trafficking, how it is impacting our lives, and what can be done to stop it here in the US. Our law enforcement agencies cannot do this job alone. It is up to the communities and citizens to be the eyes and ears in helping to fight this crime. Therefore, we will be hosting training presentations for communities, law enforcement, and medical staff. We will also be hosting trafficking awareness movies and holding musical performances with socially conscious artists. We plan to partner with various celebrities and socially conscious companies throughout the campaign and have already made arrangements with music artists and film producers who intend on joining us in key locations during the tour.
According to the Department of Justice human trafficking will become the most profitable organized crime over the next five years. Currently it is ranked the second largest crime behind only drug trafficking, generating approximately $32 billion in 2010.
In many countries in South America, middle class children cannot to go school without armed security, and families cannot go to dinner without the fear of witnessing a kidnapping. If we do not address the issue now, this will become a reality for American families as well.
