The Story

IT’S BACK, AND IT’S EVEN BETTER!

On Thursday, September 27, 2012, hundreds of sailors and supporters from New York’s media, finance, education, food and wine, maritime, and business communities will set sail for the second annual Harbor School Regatta at Governors Island. A select number of historic America’s Cup 12 metres and twenty J/24 sailboats will compete near and around
Governors Island as schooners and other sailing yachts host hundreds of spectators in New York Harbor for a delightful afternoon of cocktails, light bites and commentary
by sailing experts and media luminaries including MSNBC’s Willie Geist.

Directly following the racing, sailors and spectators will convene at Water Taxi Beach on Governors Island for the Post-Regatta Bash complete with live reggae music, Brooklyn Brewery favorites, Fishers Island Oysters and many other specialties from New York’s top eateries.

Push Off from the Dock & Win a Chelsea Clock!

New this year, the Harbor School Regatta at Governors Island is inviting sailors and non-sailors alike to face off in a Crowdrise fundraising competition to benefit the students of New York Harbor School!

Starting August 1 and continuing through October 15, every supporter who believes in a Harbor School education will have the chance to compete for the chance to win a custom-made ebony wood Ship's Bell Clock from our partners at Chelsea Clock, a $2325 value!

100% of Regatta proceeds will benefit the students of The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, the only New York City public high school that provides a rigorous
college preparatory education built upon New York’s maritime experience. Since 2003, the school has served nearly 1,000 students with a marine science and technology curriculum that is reinforced by unique programs in Aquaculture, Marine Research, Marine Systems Technology, Ocean Engineering, Professional Diving and Vessel Operations. This exceptional combination arms students with a technical skill in a marine field, prepares them for success in college and instills confidence that lasts a lifetime.

About Harbor School:

The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School (Harbor School) is a public, maritime high school located on Governors Island in New York City. Harbor School was founded in 2003 by The Urban Assembly, South Street Seaport Museum and Waterkeeper Alliance as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s effort to replace larger, underperforming schools with smaller, theme-based schools. It was located in the former Bushwick High School for seven years. The school became the first permanent tenant on Governors Island in September 2010. As the name implies, Harbor School has a special curriculum based upon New York City’s maritime experience. Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are offered in Professional SCUBA Diving, Vessel Operations, Marine Systems Technology, Aquaculture, Marine Science Research, and Ocean Engineering. The goal of these programs is for every Harbor School student to graduate with an acceptance letter at college and a technical credential in a marine field.
