HERE'S THE STORY:
My sister, Hasmig (Armenian for Jasmine), lost her fight with cancer after two years of suffering, including major operations to remove her stomach, her ovaries and months of combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Her life on earth was filled with laughter and was all about bringing joy to her family, friends and community. She lost her will to live when she found out that all her treatments had only suppressed cancer for only one month. Cancer came back. She woke up with pains, lived through the day with pain until she could not take it anymore and finally gave in on August 6, 2002.
Life has not been the same since she was gone. We, as a family, have learned to live and laugh again but her memory is as strong as it was just yesterday that we lost her.
Hasmig loved to give. She was a member of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (A.G.B.U.) throughout her life. Cancer took that but with this fundraising, I am hoping to bring back what Hasmig did during her lifetime.
Armenian General Benevolent Union is a nonprofit organization that was initiated to provide shelter for Armenian orphans and then grew to build schools and centers where it helped preserve Armenian heritage. It now contributes to various humanitarian services around the world. In Lebanon, where Hasmig was born and lived her life, A.G.B.U. has been active for many years. Unfortunately, their schools are now struggling to survive in the face of more families being unable to pay tuitions and financial support diminishing. My hope is that with little support from you, we can fund the tuition of one student at a time to help the schools become financially independent and contribute, in a small way, to “no Armenian child left without education”.
December 9 marks my sister’s birthday. Please help me celebrate her life in an amazing way.
