  Dear friends and friends of friends!! For the second year in a row I have committed to running the Los Angeles Marathon and I am reaching out to you for your support!!! This year’s marathon will take place on Sunday, March 18 (yes it’s almost here!!!). My goal this year is to raise $75,000 to benefit the amazing Los Angeles charity ONE VOICE. My passion and involvement in helping needy children and families in our own backyard for the past decade led me to discover ONE VOICE. This organization is very dear to my heart and they have been a part of my personal and professional life for the last 5 years. ONE VOICE is dedicated to helping local LA children, youth, and families who are living at or below the national poverty level with college educations, mentoring programs, holiday food & toy distribution, and emergency help all year round for working families in need. Now I know that $75,000 may seem like a lot, but last year with your support, we raised $63,000 in less than 2 weeks (WOW!!! Someone is diagnosed with lupus every 30 minutes, generally after 4-5 years of suffering from symptoms.   Lupus affects more than 1.5 million Americans.  In fact, more Americans have lupus than AIDS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell anemia, or cystic fibrosis, making it one of this country's most prevalent medical problems. Ninety percent of those diagnosed with lupus are women, and the onset of the disease usually occurs during childbearing age, between the ages of l5 and 44.  African American women are three times more likely to get lupus than white women.  It is also more common among Hispanic/Latina, Asian and American Indian women. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital strives to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. It is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance, and no child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude has developed protocols that have helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today.  St. Jude depends on donors to ensure that no child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. In addition: It costs $1.7 million a day to operate St. Jude, and public donations provide more than 70 percent of funding. Most of the funding for protocols is not covered by insurance. St. Jude covers those costs along with other costs a family typically incurs while their child is being treated at the hospital – this includes travel, housing and food. St. Jude maintains a school program to provide opportunities for patients to continue their normal educational activities. St. Jude was the first pediatric cancer research institution to place doctors, scientists and patients "all under one roof," creating a worldwide model for "bench-to-bedside" research and treatment of childhood cancers and other life-threatening diseases. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and from around the world. St. Jude was the first institution to develop a cure for sickle cell disease with a bone marrow transplant and has one of the largest pediatric sickle cell programs in the country. Research findings at St. Jude are shared freely with doctors and scientists all over the world. Dr. Michael DeBakey, a pioneer in the development of the artificial heart, said that "a child saved at St. Jude means a thousand children saved elsewhere." Cancer research is a cause that is close to my heart. In May 2009, I lost my 37-year-old brother to a brain tumor that he had been fighting courageously for more than a decade. The following day, I had planned on running and serving as the Grand Marshal for the 5K Race for Hope in Washington, D.C. to help benefit Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure (ABC2).  I knew my brother would have wanted me to continue this race so I ran that day in honor of him and all of those suffering from cancer. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. Next year, I’ll be running the 2012 Honda LA Marathon for Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure. This will be a challenging race, but one accomplishment I will be incredibly proud of and honored to do. Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure has awarded over $15 million to fund brain tumor and brain cancer research. They invest in high-risk, high-reward research in each stage of the therapeutic development pipeline. CATS (Center for Assault Treatment Services at Northridge Hospital) provides 24/7 services to victims of sexual assault and abuse of all ages in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys. Each year we serve 1,000 victims, 1/4 of them are children age 6 or younger. At CATS, victims are cared for in a nurturing environment with their safety and well being a primary concern. CATS collects forensic evidence which helps law enforcement and the D.A.'s Office get the abusers off the street, and educates the community about the importance of child abuse reporting.  Hide

Whereas the overall high school graduation rate among LAUSD students is only 55 percent, Fulfillment Fund students graduate high school at a rate of more than 91 percent and, of those who graduate, 93 percent go on to college. No matter why a person is homebound, age, health, a disability, that person faces two major difficulties: poor nutrition and loneliness. Every day, in their own homes, our clients receive lunch and dinner, the daily newspaper, fresh fruit, and companionship. This is often the only companionship they receive that day, that week, that month or even that year. Because of our service and wonderful volunteers, our clients are able to remain in their own homes even though they cannot care for themselves. For almost 40 years, AADAP has been offering residential and outpatient treatment and prevention programs to people of all walks of life, and from all communities in Southern California, while also offering culturally appropriate treatment to clients who are Asian American.   Substance abuse continues to be on the rise, even more so during a recession.  Fortunately, there are non-profit, community-based organizations like AADAP that are there to offer the support that some people may not have, and offering counseling and treatment so that they can return to living drug-free, productive lives in recovery. I'm Going blind from an eye disease called Choroideremia. My brother and 7 year old nephew also have this disease. Choroideremia is a hereditary degenerative eye disease that attacks the peripheral vision and slowly erodes it until total blindness. My mother, sister and aunt are carriers.   I am trying to raise at least an average of $12,000 per marathon for a total of $144,000 by the end of 2012. Oh did I mention I am running 12 marathons in 12 different states in 2012? All blindfolded! Because of my condition the sunlight will cause me to go blind faster. We have rescued and placed over 1300 dogs since our inception in 2001. Hi Friends and Family, As many of you know, I have been training for the LA Marathon. Although this has been a dream of mine for years, it has become a reality solely due to the inspiration of one person... On January 2, 2011, my whole world turned upside down when I received the news that one of my best friends, Trevon Moore, had lost a lifelong battle against sickle cell disease. Trevon's smile and laughter could brighten up any room. Since childhood, he taught me what true strength is and, no matter how tough times can get, to just keep smiling. There has not been one day that has passed that I don't think of Trevon and all of the beautiful memories we shared: laughs, smiles, tears, ice cream runs, hospital visits, late night texts, eating at The Loft, dancing to MJ and so much more. In an attempt to keep Trevon's spirit strong and to "run down a dream," Greg, Ricci, Bev and I committed to running the 2012 LA Marathon in support of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that is caused by an abnormal type of hemoglobin (oxygen-carrying protein inside red blood cells). It affects millions of people throughout the world, and approximately 90,000-100,000 Americans. In a time when everyone has their own causes, I know it's hard to support them all. I only ask that you opt out of that fancy caffeinated morning beverage for one week and contribute to a cause near and dear to my heart: helping raise awareness and funding to find a cure for sickle cell disease. If that's not possible, then I ask you to donate blood at your local blood bank. And if that also is not possible, please at a minimum take a moment to smile; and keep smiling no matter how hard times may get, just like Trevon always did. Having to struggle with unemployment and living on public assistance is much more challenging than training to run 26.2 miles. When we are tired from training, we will remember that we are running for a cause much bigger than ourselves — self-sufficiency for every woman who walks through the doors of Dress for Success. This past year, I lost a friend and co-worker to cancer. I ran this year in honor of him and would appreciate any funds we can raise together to fight this horrible disease. Thank you all for your kind donations.  Together we raised over $2000 for Think Cure!  That is incredible and what a great amount of money to help research and battle cancer that affects far too many of our friends, family, and fellow human beings.  As an update, I finished the LA Marathon; on this webpage, you can see my race bib and finisher medal that I received when I was all "finished".  This alone was my goal and I can say that your support played a big role in keeping me moving towards the finish line.  Very early on in the race (in Mile 3) my legs began to cramp up and I was feeling the pain that usually doesn't set in until about 19-23 miles in, and I had to motivate myself to stay in the race.  It didn't rain but the weather was exceptionally chilly (47 degrees at the Start line at Dodger Stadium) and windy (10-15 mile an hour winds which made the cold air feel even more brisk); these conditions made the day an even greater challenge. The recurring question I recieve from friends who find out I'm running the marathon is, "Do you enjoy running?" and my honest response is "No" followed by laughter. But thanks to my great Community at Mosaic Whittier who teamed up to challenge, train and encourage one another to achieve this goal of running the LA Marathon, here we are, running this race. Each one of us is in a race, it might not be a marathon and it might not involve running at all, but it sure can been some other event, whether its a career your pursuing or finding the purpose for your life. Tragically,  3 women a day are killed by their abusers. Domestic violence is no longer a family matter. It affects individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. It is a growing problem in the country creating a long lasting impact on victims and family. DVC of the SCV provides free services to survivors of domestic violence. CCI is the largest non-profit provider of assistance dogs, and is recognized worldwide for the excellence of its dogs, and the quality and longevity of the matches it makes between dogs and people. The result is a life full of increased independence and loving companionship. They train four types of assistance dogs to master over 40 specialized commands: Service Dogs, Skilled Companions, Hearing Dogs and Facility Dogs. I'm raising money for the American Cancer Society's "Hope Lodge" in New York City. My brother William "Buck" Gold was diagnosed with Leukemia last December and lived at Hope Lodge free of charge for nearly six months.  He received a life-saving bone marrow transplant from my other brother and today is cancer free.  Hope Lodge is a residence for people receiving outpatient treatment at nearby hospitals in NYC. My brother's wife and children live five hours away in upstate NY, so living at Hope Lodge allowed him to stay in mid-town Manhattan while receiving world-class care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Bucky and his wife have remarked many times what a gift Hope Lodge and the remarkable volunteers there have been. Anything you can offer to keep Hope Lodge running would be appreciated. $20, $30 anything would be great.  I figured I'm running the LA Marathon anyway, might as well help put a few dollars in the coffers of a wonderful cause.   -- Gina Hide

I'm often asked in the gym why I work so hard. The answer is BECAUSE I CAN. I spent enough time when I was younger doing less than I was capable of and, quite frankly, I just find that silly. I don't do that anymore. I work hard because I am ABLE to. I am running 26.2 miles on March 18 BECAUSE I CAN. While my intent is to beat my previous best time, I'd also like to run this year for a cause greater than myself. I chose the Muscular Dystrophy Association for two reasons: 1. Muscular dystrophy is a group of inherited disorders that involve muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue, which get worse over time. As I continue to challenge myself and get stronger, so many people are getting weaker and weaker, and there is presently no known cure for the the disorders. I will run because I CAN, for those people who CANNOT despite the desire to do so. 2. I have had the great pleasure of getting to know Lou Ferrigno as we train at the same gym. We have something in common: we both love to challenge ourselves and our bodies simply because we CAN! Lou is a supportive, encouraging and kind man. As I thought of a charity to run for, I learned he supports the MDA and I thought it a perfect fit. WE DID IT! Well it's finally over, and despite still hobbling around in the aftermath with what feels like could be a permanent limp, I'm 100% glad I decided to run the LA Marathon. Thankfully, the two things I was dreading may happen during the race never materialized - injury, and wet weather! My troublesome right calf held firm and there was not so much as a drop of rain all day, which ensured I was able to fully enjoy a  truly exhilarating experience. My marathon wingman Dan MacPherson and I were joined by 2 other friends and we started the race at a very comfortable pace, allowing us to settle in and take in the sights, sounds and excitement as we traversed through Downtown LA and then up through Hollywood. At mile 12, it was time to take a short pit stop and both Dan and myself needed to do something neither of us were able to do prior to the race and shed a few unwanted pounds in the restroom. But with this break taking longer than expected, we finally resumed the run, not only losing that extra weight, but losing a good 15 minutes of valuable time in the process! Feeling quite comfortable around the halfway mark, we knew it was time to step it up a notch. Dan and I gradually picked up the pace, and by about the 18 mile mark after some window shopping down Rodeo drive, we were ready to lift the level once again and bring it home. I surprised myself by reaching the 22 mile mark injury free and with plenty of gas in the tank, so there was no choice but for the two of us to finish strong down the home stretch. At mile 25 we were truly in the zone, weaving in and out of hundreds of weary finishers, when finally hitting our straps after turning the corner at Ocean Ave and spotting the finish line in the distance. This provided quite a rush, and there was no stopping the legs now from achieving their ultimate goal, and we stormed home through the sea of spectators to cross the line at a respectable time of 4 hours 25 minutes. The 3 months of pain, sacrifice and hard work was now insignificant and I'll never forget the emotion of crossing that finish line, particularly as only 3 years earlier I wasn't sure if I'd even be able to walk again due to a spinal injury. I would like to thank once again, everybody who supported me in their own way, particularly those who donated to the two wonderful organizations for which I was running to raise funds. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and who knows, I may even be crazy enough to do it all again some day in the future...   Play Rugby USA (www.playrugbyusa.com) is working to give inner city urban youth across America the opportunity to develop long lasting life skills, make new diverse friendships, stay healthy and safe while playing one of the most engaging fun team sports in the world. The American Indian Community Council (AICC) was established in 1998 as a public-private community council under the Los Angeles County Children’s Planning Council. Formerly known as the Los Angeles County American Indian Children’s Council, AICC has recently filed to become an independent non-profit organization. Since its inception, the AICC has served as a central hub and is a resource for the Los Angeles American Indian/Alaska Native community. Led by a democratically elected community council, AICC supports youth and elders organizing, improved child welfare and mental health systems, and increases economic sufficiency among other community improvement efforts. AICC recieved its 501(c)(3) status on June 16, 2011 and have just begun our journey to create leaders and strong families in the Los Angeles Native community.  We currently meet every second tuesday of the month and have had a strong following from many City and County departments that have representatives that attend our meetings. Our goal is to raise funds to help support the community work that AICC is currently involved in.  Some of these areas include the Indian Child Welfare Act, Family Economic Success, UNYLA Youth Group, Elders Group, First Womens-First Tuesday, and the Mental Health. I am raising money for The Dawg Squad, a dog rescue group in Los Angeles. Check them out at www.dawgsquad.org and learn about all the wonderful ways they help homeless Los Angeles dogs find their forever homes!   So how does it work? Simple really.  We work together to raise money for these dogs.  By work together I mean I run 26.2 miles the day after St. Patrick's Day and you click the donate button and donate anywhere from $10 to $1B (really, $10 is enough.)  So to recap, I give up what is arguably my favorite holiday of the year to run 26.2 miles and you click a button and offer up what amounts to less than a movie ticket.  So go on, click away! Laurin Leonard wrote - My first marathon is dedicated to Captain Gregory Galeazzi: brother, son, cousin, friend, leader and hero. On May 26th, 2011, Greg was seriously wounded while conducting a dismounted patrol in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The blast caused severe injuries to his legs, requiring above the knee amputations on both limbs, and his right arm was critically damaged. Greg has since been moved to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX and is beginning the long process of rehabilitation. He is 25 years old. I met Greg in July of last year, and can personally attest to his authenticity, amicability and selflessness. He is the brilliant and fascinating individual everyone wants to befriend. I admire Greg’s tenacious appetite for life and his unwavering inner-strength. He is approaching his difficult recovery with the same vigor that shapes every other facet of his life. I am asking for your support while honor Greg by running the 26.2 miles through my hometown of Los Angeles, CA on March 18th, 2012. I lost my older sister Becca Wilkins in 2005 to melanoma skin cancer. Experiencing a loss in the family changed my perspective on life. I instantly realized how precious each moment is. I choose to live life to the fullest and not waste anymore time taking life for granted.  When Becca took her last breath on August 15, 2005, she was in the company of all her loved ones. Among this group, was her 2 year old daughter, Adeline Wilkins, and now widowed husband Patrick Wilkins. Patrick has done a tremendous job raising Adeline. His perserverance and love made it possible to work through this tragedy.   Being the avid runner I am, I decided to take on the challenge of running a marathon in honor of my sister and her beautiful family she created. I would like to raise money for a melanoma skin cancer foundation. Not only to raise awarness but, to help others in need. Since my work schedule does not permit me to join a team and train with others. I am training and raising money on my own time. May love be with you always :)   Hide

Helping to support MS research by running the 2012 LA Marathon. Help support this great cause by supporting me from the city to the sea.  I am running in this event in memory of Kevin Russell my friend Mike's father who was lost to MS a few years ago.  I never had the opportunity of meeting Mike's father but I have been told that he would have liked me.  Kevin turned Mike on to music at an early age and Mike has shared a lot of his musical knowledge with me.  New music has inspired me to run farther, faster, and harder in my training for LA 2012.    I complete my long runs on saturday's. I plan on donating $1 for every mile I run on Saturday from now until the day I run the LA Marathon.  I encourage anyone willing to help to do the same. So after last year's horrible weather during the LA Marathon, many would think I'm done with marathons. No way! I'm only getting started. Philip's recovery has been great over the last year. He's even quit smoking and with better weather he's promised to do a mile or two with me... wink wink! This year I'm running for Philip and other Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) friends I've made over the last 2 years. Some of those friends are Andrew and Kirsten Skinner, who run a great organization called Triumph Foundation. Triumph Foundation is very involved in the community through SCI advocacy like speaking engagements, attending SCI support groups and meeting one on one, they also rebuild SCI patients homes to make it more handicapped accessible, and the famous basket deliveries to newly injured people in hospitals. I'm proud to run for them and with them. Please help by allowing their efforts to carry on and grow through your donation. Hide

Ann was my Nana, my mom's mother.  She suffered a stroke when I was a kid but I still have very fond memories of her.  I remember that I was always her offcial wheeler and would push her wherever she needed to go in her wheelchair.   I am running to benefit the American Stroke Foundation in her memory.  Hopefully on the day of the marathon she will be there to help push me where I need to go, the finish line :-) I complete my long runs on Saturday's.
