We believe camp is an experience every child deserves, regardless of their ability to pay! Founded in 1910, over 4,000 children from Connecticut and Southern New England attend the Channel 3 Kids Camp each year. Campers experience a care-free refuge for healthy play, the outdoors and making new friends with programs that promote confidence and independence. Channel 3 Kids Camp offers traditional day and overnight summer camp, Camp Venture’s (an afterschool program), and a year-round teen leadership program. The Kids Camp also hosts Nature’s Classroom, Siblings Connections which reunites siblings in foster care, and partners with Camp Abilities to provide camping experiences to children who are visually impaired, blind or deaf blind. Special Events and public support make it possible for all children to experience year-round camp programming without financial restrictions. The Kids Camp is currently expanding facilities in anticipation of opening a ‘Camp for all Kids’ by building Ashley’s Place that will accommodate children of varying abilities with a 24-hours nurse and health area. I'm training hard and fundraising even harder - since this is my first 1/2 marathon, what better way to gain motivation than by running for a truly amazing and very personal cause. I've set a very ambitious fundraising goal and hope you will find it in your hearts to help me meet that goal. "Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life. Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder. The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible." Society as a whole has a very limited understanding and compassion for those dealing with this sort of illness. There's a lot of negative stigma surrounding these illnesses for example - if someone is bipolar they must be CRAZY...and if someone is schizophrenic - forget it....they are WAY off their rocker. Many types of mental illnesses are often joked about or worse, dismissed and not taken seriously. The charity I've chosen to run for helps dispel these myths, provides support to those who may look fine on the outside but are truly suffering inside, and helps family members of those with these types of "silent illnesses" learn coping methods and various other useful insights into the internal world their loved one lives in. I hope you will find it in your hearts to help me raise money for this phenomenal organization and - if nothing else, I hope you will learn to not take people at face value for they could be fighting an internal battle that others will never even begin to understand. NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. The Wounded Warrior Project is the charity that I will be running for. Please read on below if you are not familiar with this charity. Thank you. Wounded Warrior Project™ (WWP) exists to honor and empower Wounded Warriors who incurred service-connected injuries on or after September 11, 2001. On that date, America watched in horror as approximately 3,000 people died including hundreds of firefighters and rescue workers. The tragic events of Sept. 11 are often the reason warriors say they felt a sense of duty to volunteer for the military. These individuals chose to defend our country, and that is why we honor them. Sept. 11 also served as a catalyst for conflicts Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Operation Iraqi Freedom refers to military operations in Iraq that began March 19, 2003 and officially ended August 31, 2010. Operation Enduring Freedom refers to combat operations in Afghanistan and other regions in support of the Global War on Terror. With advancements in battlefield medicine and body armor, an unprecedented percentage of service members are surviving severe wounds or injuries. For every U.S. soldier killed in World Wars I and II, there were 1.7 soldiers wounded. In Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, for every U.S. soldier killed, seven are wounded. Combined, there have been almost 42,000 injured in the two conflicts – nearly 32,000 injured in Operation Iraqi Freedom and nearly 10,000 in Operation Enduring Freedom. With the mission to honor and empower Wounded Warriors, WWP is the hand extended to encourage warriors as they adjust to their new normal and achieve new triumphs. Absolutely, we are a private, nonprofit 501(c) 3, incorporated in 1955, operating in both Canton and Unionville, CT.  More importantly, we are a community of adults with physical disabilities, who with the help of friends and supporters, created an accessible living option with support services.  We are also a nonprofit nursing home offering a continuum of inpatient services, as well as, outpatient rehabilitation.  We have provided services to people and their families throughout the state and reaching into out of state communities.  We are a unique living option for adults with disabilities and we need the help of all our community members to remain a viable service provider. We are participating in the ING Hartford Marathon and Half Marathon so that more of you get to know us, to be active in community events, and because it is a fun, healthy way to raise funds. Health In Harmony (HIH) is a Portland, Oregon based non-profit whose mission is to foster innovative solutions to the crisis of human disease and environmental destruction facing our planet. HIH partners with Alam Sehat Lestari, an Indonesian non-profit organization co-founded by Dr. Kinari Webb, Dr. Hotlin Ompusunggu and Dr. Antonia Gorog. The Indonesian name means Healthy Nature Everlasting and the shortening, ASRI, means harmoniously balanced. True to its name, ASRI combines health care, conservation, environmental education and medical training in Sukadana, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.  ASRI works with local communities to integrate high-quality, affordable health care with strategies to protect the threatened rain forests of Gunung Palung National Park. Because HIH and ASRI believe that human and environmental health are inextricably linked, their work encompasses multiple fields of impact. It is at the intersection of these that the health of the whole – the whole person as well as the health of the whole planet – is achieved. The daily news brings stories of individuals, families and national health systems in crisis. A quieter, deeper crisis hums beneath these stories – one in which basic human needs and the integrity of the natural environment are pitted against each other. When families in Indonesia must log tropical forests to pay for basic needs such as health care, the impacts are manifold: habitat for rare and endangered species is destroyed; fields are flooded and crops destroyed; increased standing water increases the incidence of diseases like malaria and dengue fever; and the degradation of global air quality impacts all of us, across the planet. In West Kalimantan, Indonesia, poor health and grinding poverty push human populations to engage in illegal logging for survival, putting vital rainforest habitat at risk. Logging provides a short-term fix, with long-term consequences for valuable plant and animal species, human health, and global climate change. HIH and ASRI are working to provide an innovative, effective solution that empowers individuals to safeguard their own health and the health of their families, while preserving the natural environment.The vision for Health In Harmony began more than 15 years ago, when undergraduate biology major Kinari Webb traveled to West Kalimantan, Indonesia to pursue a dream of studying orangutans. While in the forests of Gunung Palung National Park, she recognized the direct link between the environmental destruction wrought by illegal logging, the desperate state of human health in the communities around the park, and the impact of rain forest loss on health worldwide. Thirteen years later, Dr. Kinari Webb returned to the Gunung Palung communities to turn her long-held vision – a comprehensive program that would both serve human health needs and preserve rain forest habitat – into reality. Through this approach that works at the intersection of human and environmental health, Health In Harmony provides a model that will, in years to come, be replicated to create lasting change in countries, and communities, around the world. Health In Harmony’s critical support has made the following highlights possible: - more than 14,000 patients & 20,000 patient visits since the clinic opened in July, 2007; - established a DOTs program for prevention of drug-resistant tuberculosis; - created an incentive program to provide health care rewards in exchange for rainforest protection; - initiated an innovative reforestation program to restore damaged rainforest habitat; - began an organic farm training program to assist community members in establishing better livelihoods, better nutrition, and a healthier relationship with the natural environment; - distributed goats to widows to help provide a critical component to our organic farming work. Klinik ASRI is connecting human and environmental health by providing healthcare at affordable rates – including barter for reforestation supplies, organic manure for organic farming, native handicrafts and labor- as well a discounted ‘green credit’ system for villages not involved in illegal logging of the local Gunung Palung National Park. It’s the heart of ASRI’s work, providing a community space and invaluable healthcare, as well as symbolizing the key insight of Health In Harmony’s founder Kinari Webb: we must take care of human health and environmental health simultaneously. Now, Health In Harmony and ASRI are planning to expand the ASRI Klinik into a much-needed hospital; with your donation we can make that happen! To honor the memory of our founding Board member and good friend, Jeff Partridge, the Hartford Marathon Foundation created a relay race for school children within the ING Hartford Marathon. The program is appropriately called “Jeff’s Running Partners”, because of Jeff’s passion for running and his commitment to education. A teacher, coach or parent representing a school, will run the entire Hartford Marathon accompanied by a team of students running as a relay team. Each student runs one or more miles, depending on his or her ability. It is possible for each student to run multiple miles, if it is deemed appropriate. In lieu of the full marathon, 2 or more adults may each run a portion of the marathon.   The future of our sport (and our society) lies with our healthy, young children. We must do everything possible to encourage fitness in our kids. We are headed in the right direction. Through our own dedication to running and triathlon, we demonstrate the benefits of being fit and the great quality of life offered through health and fitness. HMF has committed to do more. We are offering more kids running events and are staging a Family Fitness Training Program beginning in June. We lowered 5K entry fees for kids so families can run together without breaking the bank.
