THE STORY:

Hi!  I'm Chris Meusel and I'm running in the 2013 Boston Marathon on behalf of Joslin Diabetes Center!

I am fortunate to run for a cause that is very personal.  I have Type 1 Diabetes and was first diagnosed and treated at the Joslin Diabetes Center.  Managing my diabetes was very difficult for me, much of the time I was bouncing high and low and having a hard time figuring out what food to eat.  When one is first diagnosed with Diabetes, it is very much an emotional roller coaster of grief.  Through it all the Joslin Center was there for me with Nutrition information, coaching and counciling, and follow up phone calls.

I finally learned that a good amount of exercise and eating the right kinds of food would allow me to live the same as everyone else and i could live a long happy life with this disease.  I am now in the best shape of my life after finding a martial arts and fitness center in Littleton, Plum Blossom Academy, and taking up Tai Chi, Kung Fu and CrossPit.  Additionally, I have an affection for Obstacle Racing and compete often in Spartan Races and Tough Mudder.  Last year I completed the Boston Marathon and this year I intend to beat my time.  Even with the incredible heat of Boston Marathon 2012, I finished with a blood glucose level of 137 (which is great!)

Diabetes is close to home for many people.  We all have friends and family that may have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes.  This "silent killer" can slowly destroy your finer nervous system by damaging arteries, veins and capillaries.  This leads to lack of feeling in fingers and toes, deficient functionality in kidneys and other organs, and can lead to stroke or heart disease.

At Joslin every person is dedicated to realizing our vision of a world without diabetes and its complications through a relentless pursuit of our mission:

To improve the lives of people with diabetes and its complications through innovative care, education, and research that will lead to prevention and cure of the disease.
