STUFF ABOUT ME:

Last year I ran the 2011 NYC Marathon with Team EMC.  The compassion and support I recieved from my fellow team members was a wonderful experience.  I feel honored to not only support but run for Team Every Mother Counts in the 2012 NYC Marathon.  Before I became part of EMC I was NOT a runner...but if running will help change maternal mortality not just in the USA but globally as well I am in for the challenge.  I often say  to my friends and family that if someone dared me to run across the country to change and decrease maternal mortality I would do it thats how passionate and serious I am about this organization and issue.

 If you would like to read my personal story on why I support an organization like Every Mother Counts please see below.

 Protect through Awareness our expectant Mothers

The answer to why I am running? It is for my sister PAM.

My sister Pam, died after giving birth to a healthy baby boy in July 2007, she was only 26.  I am running because Pam was educated but not informed, she was deprived of the awareness of what a drug used to induce labor could do.  The drug is called cytotec, which is not FDA approved for inducing labor, yet used world wide. If Pam was informed about the harmful side effects this drug is capable of producing she would have never allowed it to be used.

Informing each other on maternal mortality one story at a time will help save lives! The fact that in 2007, the World Health Organization reported that 40 countries have LOWER maternal death rates than the United States is something we all need to be concerned about.

With every step I take, every corner I turn, every street I cross while training for this marathon, my sister's soul pushes me.  At times the pain and exhaustion that I feel while training, temporarily takes away the pain in my heart of having lost my best friend, but I am quickly reminded that my sister is no longer physically here with me, especially when I reach for the phone to call her. She is now part of the 90% of pregnancy related deaths that COULD have been prevented.

Pam was an exceptional athlete growing up.  Months before she became pregnant she was training for a marathon.  In her honor I am finishing the training and marathon for her.  I will finish the race she was unable to complete.  As Charles R Swindoll once said " Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it."  My reaction is to fight, to run side by side with the spirit of my sister, until the last step of this race, and of life itself is complete.

With your vote and donation we can save lives! Think about if it was your sister, daughter, wife, cousin, niece, granddaughter or friend. Wouldn't YOU do everything you can??

PAM, TATIA, LAURIE, JEN - you are in my heart every mile of the way....

Happy May! It’s finally spring, and kids will soon be running out the school doors into sweet summer freedom. But over 19,000,000 children across the country do not own a single book. Can you imagine a summer without even a little fun reading?

Please take a minute to check out Reader to Reader's newest fundraiser with Twive & Receive: http://twive.razoo.com/story/Amherst-Loves-Books Your donation on June 14th could help us win a share of $30,000! Now more than ever, the smallest donation can have a huge impact. You can sign up for a reminder email on our page, or if you just can't wait to get books in the hands of children, donate now. Thank you for your support!

Happy April, CR friend!
Reader to Reader is auctioning off some great artwork to raise funds for our many international programs, thanks to our friends at the ART4GOOD Foundation. If you like art, books, or education, stop by and take a look at the 35 beautiful pieces available! http://bit.ly/HjFtMO
You get a beautiful piece of art, and RTR can:
-provide special education programs for children in the Dominican Republic;
-teach women to read in Nigeria;
-keep abandoned children in childhood through reading and improve theater in rural China;
-sponsor Haitian kids to finish school;
-continue to grow our public library in a coffee-farming Costa Rican village;
AND support many other programs that do wonderful work in India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Kosovo, Ghana and other countries.
If art isn’t your thing, you can still support our programs by donating or joining our team. Take a look at my projects to see more of what we do.
All the best, and HAPPY READING,
Kat

Happy March! This is a month of really awesome holidays. International Women's Day, International Reading Day, Dr. Seuss Day, St Patrick's Day.. and who could forget Alien Abduction Day?

In honor of these wonderful holidays, many of which support women and reading, To Mother With Love is announcing a $500 challenge grant from a local donor. Every dollar donated to our project, up to $500, will be matched! Please give to support the women of Ikenne, Nigeria, who have for so long sacrificed for their children to become educated, but cannot read themselves. If you are unable to donate this month, please pass along this opportunity or become a team member. Thank you for your support!
