HERE'S THE STORY:
The Shelter
Located in the North Lawndale neighorhood on the west side of Chicago, Lena Washington Food and Shelter provides assistance to up to 65 women and children with nowhere else to go. Helping these families get back on their own takes more than meals to eat and beds to sleep on. It takes a village. This is why Lena works to be a driving force in the surrounding community.
A Project for the Neighborhood
We envision the shelter’s open space becoming a center of cooperative activity in the warm months. Already in the yard we have planted a vegetable garden, picnic tables have been built and will be painted by the children and used for neighborhood cook-outs, and sporting goods have been donated.
But the greatest project, for which we are seeking your help, is to build a full basketball court in the yard. Not only will the court provide essential recreational opportunity to the children and youth living at the shelter and on the surrounding blocks; a group of unemployed neighborhood residents will receive on-the-job training in paving, gaining skills and experience to seek jobs in construction. These residents will also take responsibility for the court’s upkeep.
The court will strengthen Lena Washington’s role as the anchor of a block devastated by foreclosures, un(der)employment, drug activity, health problems, and an educational crisis. It will fulfill the dream of the Late Bishop Lena Washington, who devoted her life to those who don’t get a fair shot at their own dreams. The people on this block are eager for a sign that opportunities do exist in their neighborhood—let’s give ‘em a sign!
We have already secured $3000 for the two basketball hoops and a write-off of labor costs but it will cost about $5000 to purchase the materials to pave the court. We're over halfway to funding the project and we need your help to raise the rest of the money!
