WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:
On November 6th, when my sister, Nancy, and I stand on the Verrazano Bridge along side 45,000 other runners, we will be following in our father’s footsteps …literally! Our dad, Russell Haystrand, was an avid runner having completed 26 marathons, 13 of which were his “favorites”-- New York City Marathons. With every step we take, we will remember his passion for running and for life. He approached his 4½ year battle with colorectal cancer with the same determination and strength of mind and spirit that enabled him to run through exhaustion, pain and overwhelming fatigue to cross the finish line 26 times. We called his fight against cancer his 27th marathon, and on November 24th 2010 he crossed that finish line with grace and dignity.
After our dad passed away, Nancy and I decided we were going to run the New York City Marathon; to run the same streets he loved to run, to honor him and keep his legacy alive. We were so excited and grateful to also be able to participate as part of the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation and help raise money for a cause that is so close to our hearts.
Our dad, a member of NYRR for many years, was the first guy out in the early morning hours dragging his friends out of bed to run countless miles. You could find him on any given weekend doing a race, sometimes two! He was always happy to share training tips, advice or even, after finishing a race, run back to meet a friend who was struggling and “run him in” while giving words of encouragement. Our dad always told us to run with a dream in our heart. Nancy and I are proud to run this marathon in memory of our father, Russell Haystrand. We will be taking thousands of steps to get to that finish line and he will be in our hearts every single step of the way.
My father helped me train for my two prior marathons and I am going to need your help to complete my 3rdmarathon on my quest to completing 26 marathons just like him.
Please help me raise money for the Colon Cancer Challenge Foundation and if you are in the area please come and cheer for me and my sister, Nancy, as we run the streets of NYC in memory of our father, Russell R. Haystrand.
