HERE'S THE STORY:
Some of the old timers may well remember the film Lorenzo’s Oil. While most of the movie is authentic, the happy ending, frolicking boys free of disease may be a bit of an exaggeration. Nevertheless, published research (Moser HW, Raymond RV, Lu SE, et al. Follow-up of 89 asymptomatic patients with adrenoleukodystrophy treated with lorenzo’s oil. Arch Neurol. 2005;62:1073-80) suggested that the Oil may be beneficial for pre-symptomatic boys. So, while not proven, it is generally accepted that all boys testing positive for the gene mutation should be getting Lorenzo's Oil. Some of these guys will most certainly die. While we don't know for sure that the oil will keep them alive, we think it is a good thing, and is definitely better than what is in second place.
Problem is, the only access to the Oil is through a study, at the Kennedy-Krieger Institute (http://www.kennedykrieger.org/). Like most of us these days, they are low on cash- they have a number of boys waiting to go on the trial, but there is not enough funding to get it done. I have set out to try and get some money for this important cause. So far, pretty good, as soon as I begin talking about the boys, most immediately open their checkbook. Really amazing and makes me want to give them a hug.
