BENEFITING: MEMPHIS BEAT THE ODDS FOUNDATION

EVENT DATE: May 01, 2013

HOURS PLEDGED: 25

THE STORY:

For 19 years the Memphis "Beat the Odds" Foundation (MBTO) has been recognizing the efforts of youth who are overcoming significant adversity in their lives. These young people are persevering despite poverty, illness, traumatic loss, abuse, war, gang violence, drugs/alcohol, etc... Despite these life circumstances they are determined to be more than what the world has dictated they "should" be. They have maintained/improved their grades. They are taking leadership roles within their schools, churches, communities. Most importantly, they are using the lessons that a disadvantaged life has taught them as a guide for helping their communities. MBTO is a community driven non-profit, run on the sweat and tears of dedicated and unpaid volunteers. Each year 6 remarkable young people, between the ages of 13-21, are recognized. Additionally, an adult who is making a positive impact in the lives of youth is also recognized.

The use of art as an effective tool to aid in personal emotional and intellectual growth has long been established. The Memphis "Beat the Odds" Foundation Art vs. the Odds event is geared toward educating middle school and high school aged children about  the importance of participating in service within their communities but to also aid these young people in understanding that they are not alone in thier personal struggles.  Through this project young people are allowed the opportunity to express themselves and explore what it means to overcome and "Beat the Odds." Alternately, young artists are encouraged to explore the importance of being a responsible world citizen through service.

The art project will be announced to area schools in December and close in May. Submissions will be broken down by age groups and the winners for each age category will be announced in May. The winning pieces of art will be featured during the summer awards event and on print and electronic media distributed prior to that event. Winners will receive recognition from the city mayor's office and a gift certificate to a local art supplier. The amount of the gift certificates are dependent on community donations. Please help us in fostering the positive potential of today's young people, building tomorrows community leaders, and a more socially conscience future generation.
