Dear Friends and Family,
It's hard to believe that this marks the 15 year anniversary of our MGH Marathon Team " Fighting Kid's Cancer One Step at a Time". Our 2012 team includes 110 dedicated folks who are excited and passionate about our cause and are ready to break our all time fundraising record. Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock Financial, our team has raised about 7 million dollars to support the childhood cancer program at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children. I know that it will be no surprise to you that I started my training for my 22nd Boston Marathon. Once again, my family , friends, and patients will get me through another marathon. As always, my training will be on the minimalist side but I will finish the marathon because of your support. I also hope to raise a record amount of money this year.
Each year I dedicate my marathon run to one of my patients. This year I will be running in honor of Lily. Lily just had her 6th birthday and she is one of the most remarkable little girls that I have ever met. She was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia several months ago and is now in remission after receiving months of chemotherapy . As soon as Lily arrives in clinic she orchestrates how things are going to happen that day. This always includes having the support of one of our child life specialists and her Ipad at her bedside. Each week Lily gives us a lively update about her activities. She hates to miss school and just started taking ballet lessons. Lily doesn't miss a beat and will easily motivate me to complete the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boston. I hope that you get a chance to meet Lily and her parents as they cheer me on at Mile 20.
Thank you for your continued dedication to our childhood cancer program and your confidence in our work. Each and everyone of our patients and their families are very appreciative of your support. Every year we reach new heights with respect to curing children with cancer and the future could not look brighter.
