Marathon for Homeless LGBT Kids

BENEFITING: Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center, Inc.

EVENT: The Wipro San Francisco Marathon 2012

EVENT DATE: Jul 28, 2012

Mileage Tracker: 16

THE STORY:

Of the estimated 1.6 million homeless American youth, between 20 and 40 percent identify as LGBT.

•26 percent of youth who come out to their parents as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender are kicked out of their homes

•25-33 percent of all homeless youth have engaged in survival sex

•42 percent of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth abuse alcohol

•Nearly 50 percent of LGBT homeless youth have attempted suicide

(The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. )

The combination of poverty and homophobia has proven lethal, and literally left thousands of youth doing whatever it takes to survive on the streets.

Jeff Griffith Youth Center offers homeless LGBT youth free breakfast and lunch, showers, clothing, laundry facilities, a cyber center, counseling, and social activities as well as free testing for HIV and other STDs.

The Center also offers a program to help young adults get the equivalency of a high school diploma (GED) and/or a job.

For those that have NOWHERE TO GO, they have a 24-bed transitional living program in Hollywood where any teen may be able to stay for up to 18 months.

This organization also has a special place in my heart, as I have been volunteering here since August 2011. It is made up of an inspirational group of volunteers, staff, and attorneys.
