On April 16, 2012, after over 20 years of cheering from the sidelines, I will take on my longtime goal of running the Boston Marathon. After completing my first marathon at the Marine Corps in October 2011, I feel ready to take on the 26.2 mile challenge in my favorite city, this time in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay.
This amazing non-profit organization makes a significant difference in the lives of at-risk youth throughout the Greater Boston area. For more than 60 years, BBBSMB’s community and school based mentoring programs have proven success in changing the lives of children in the Commonwealth. The agency’s trained professionals and staff carefully and thoughtfully recruit and match volunteers, “Bigs” with community youths, “Littles”. The friendship that can bud from their match has the potential to change and improve the lives of both Big and Little as they open each other’s eyes to new worlds and grow as people. While volunteering at a recent BBBSMB event, I was inspired by the words of the keynote speaker as he talked about the importance of changing the lives of children in order to change the world.
The emotional and physical challenge of training for a marathon, especially in the Boston winter is made easier with the support and encouragement that I am lucky enough to have from so many of you. I have been blessed with many amazing relationships in my life. Donating to BBBSMB allows more youths the opportunity to experience the same benefits that come from supportive, healthy, encouraging friendships. I am reaching out to you in hopes that you will consider supporting my goal of raising $6,000 for BBBSMB. The easiest way to donate is on this secure Crowdrise site; however, you can also mail checks made out to 'Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mass Bay' to my home address at 6 Henchman St. Boston, 02113. Every little bit can help make a huge difference. I truly appreciate your generosity in advance and will have you all in my heart on race day.
