I am running the Eugene Marathon on April 29th 2012 and am asking you to sponsor me in my fundraising efforts for a family devastated by a flood. While most of us were celebrating the new year in Jan 2012, the state of Minas Gerais, in Brazil was experiencing devastating floods and mudslides that displaced over 10,000 people; numerous lives, homes, and livelihoods were all lost. Mestre Jurandir (Master of Capoeira Angola) and his family were among the displaced. Mestre Jurandir has taught capoeira for over 30yrs all over the world. If you are lucky enough to know him he has likely opened his heart, mind, and/or his home to you. In effect, teaching us what true generosity of spirit is. Let us return the axe (good energy) and help to construct a new home for him and his family.
As a portlander, I am reminded daily that none of us control the weather. We wake up, look outside, celebrate and/or curse what we see, then life goes on. It was in this spirit that I spent the winter training in the rain; meaning dark, cold, wet Portland night running. Meanwhile, my friend and teacher, Mestre Jurandir and his family lost everything in a flood and are struggling to rebuild their home. Not sure how to make the connection to running in the rain and losing everything except to say that moving forward, step by step, is vital. And no matter what mother nature sends our way, life must go on. If you can help this cause, myself and the capoeira community would be truly grateful. Any amount helps, just like one foot in front of the other makes a marathon.
