THE STORY:

MPALA WILDLIFE FOUNDATION wrote -

Help us save our elephants!

Mpala ranch lies in the cross-roads of centuries-old migration corridors that are followed annually by more than 7000 elephants. On Mpala, we pride ourselves in providing a 48,000 acre safe haven for these highly social, intelligent and sentient animals.  The elephants who rely on Mpala comprise the second largest elephant population in Kenya, and providing for their safety is something we take very seriously.

However, our elephants are in crisis.  Illegal killing of elephants for ivory has skyrocketed in the past two years. In 2010 and 2011, elephant deaths due to poaching exceeded the sum of the previous decade, and by the end of 2011, over half of all elephant deaths were attributed to illegal killing – just for their teeth. The statistics gathered during the first months of 2012 show a surge in poaching not witnessed since the 1980s.

Help us protect our elephants by supporting our elephant security and monitoring team.  Your contributions will pay for foot scouts to patrol boundaries, for fuel and maintenance of our vehicles so we can keep track of our elephant families and respond to alerts when poachers are in the region, and to gather data to keep anti-poaching activities informed and focused.  Our goal is to reverse the current trend in poaching and return Laikipia to its justifiable position as an elephant safe haven.
