Just a few days before Christmas (12/20/11), my aunt and cousin were involved in a fatal car accident near Cameron, Texas. Sadly, my beloved aunt was killed on the spot. My 25-year old cousin survived, but has sustained critical brain injuries. Luckily, he has made some progress and was recently moved out of ICU into a long term rehabilitation facility (specializing in brain injuries). Afzal is, and has been, fighting for his life. He is slowly being retaught how to do the things we take for granted (e.g. how to breathe, swallow, sit, and, hopefully one day, run).
This March, I will be running 13.1 miles during the NYC Half-Marathon in memory of my aunt and on behalf of my cousin. This tragedy has reminded me that we must seize each day and live life without any regrets as we don't know what tomorrow brings. I want Afzal, and anyone else suffering from traumatic brain injuries, to know that I am running for them. I hope this will inspire Afzal to get back on his feet quickly, so we can, one day, run a race together!
The charity I have selected to benefit from your donations is the Texas affiliate of the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA). BIAA is "the country’s oldest and largest nationwide brain injury advocacy organization with a mission to be the voice of brain injury. Through advocacy, education and research, they bring help, hope and healing to millions of individuals living with brain injury, their families and the professionals who serve them."
