I have completed my fundraising thru-hike of the A.T. An article I was interviewed for in September appears here:http://bit.ly/15FFMjL
via Crowdrise 4 weeks ago
THE STORY:
I began a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in March of 2012 and completed it in March of 2013. Part of my motivation for this hike was to raise money for blood cancer research because my mother passed away from nonhodgkin's lymphoma in May of 2011. The University of Michigan has a fantastic haemotology oncology research group which gets funding through the University of Michigan Regents. So even though it looks like the Regents keep all of the donations, it is acually sent to a group of labs and doctors who perform studies and clinical trials. This is their website: http://www.med.umich.edu/intmed/hemonc/research/index.html
My fundraising organization is linked to this page and I am taking donations by the mile. Keep in mind that the entire Appalachian Trail was between 2,184.2 and 2,185 miles when I hiked it. I have hiked all but 65 miles of it. So approximately 2,119.2 miles or more. The weather conditions became dangerous in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and I had to skip a section of trail that I will finish hiking this summer. I will use milages published in David Miller's "The AT Guide" 2012 and 2013 editions to determine how far I have hiked.
Thank you in advance for your contributions to this effort.
I would like to kick things off by pledging $0.50/mile.
