THE STORY:
Hi friends,
As most of you know, I've been involved with iMentor since I moved to New York City in 2007. iMentor connects individuals like myself with New York City high school students with the hope of building a positive relationship that extends into college. Having completed a 2-year match with a mentee in the Bronx, I'm currently matched with Gabriel, a junior at Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts (UASPA) on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
UASPA is a public school that attracts students from all corners of New York City who have a passion for performing arts. While students take courses in subjects like math and science, the majority of their day is devoted to pursuing one of several core disciplines including singing, dancing, and acting. Gabriel, a resident of the Bronx, is an aspiring choreographer who has been dancing his whole life. UASPA has been a wonderful opportunity for Gabriel to connect with peers who share his passion and to engage in a top-notch college preparatory curriculum.
Building a relationship with Gabriel for the last half-year has been a great experience. Not only does Gabriel have incredible artistic talent, he is also the leader of his local Army ROTC program. These activities, combined with an hour subway ride to and from school, make Gabriel one of the most energetic and motivated high school students that I've ever met.
