THE STORY:
Hi everyone!
As you may know, I have been volunteering with iMentor for the past three years. For the past two years, I have mentored Yasmin, or Jaz as I affectionately call her. She is a Sudanese immigrant, who enrolled in 9th grade not speaking a word of English. From the moment we first met, I was in awe of her ability and comfort level speaking English after only a few years in NYC. She immediately opened up to me and shared her struggles adjusting to life in the US and her hopes to graduate high school and go on to college.
Over the past two years we have sent weekly emails back and forth and met up for monthly events, including ice skating, practicing interview skills, and most recently a trip to the Museum of Natural History. To be honest, at every event we attend she just wants to tell me all about what is going on in her life, just like any teenager. I know she values having someone listen to her - not a parent, not a teacher, but someone she can look up to and ask for advice. I am excited as Yasmin begins her spring semester of senior year, and hopeful that I can provide the guidance and support to help her graduate and plan for her future.
I hope you will consider volunteering with this great organization and/or donating to help me reach my goal of enrolling 1 new mentee in the program for a year!
Every dollar makes a difference. A donation as small as $25 allows a mentee to attend a year of iMentor events. $100 supplies a mentee with a year's access to monthly career and college preperation events.
