Dear Friends,
On November 6, I will be running the 2011 NYC Marathon for B*CURED to help raise awareness for brain cancer. This is the 2nd year B*CURED has sponsored a team for the NYC Marathon and I'm thrilled to be a part of it!
B*CURED has become a very important part of our lives since the loss of Karena’s mother, Leslie Bullock, to brain cancer in 2006. Brain cancer affects over one million people each year and not only is there no definitive cure, there doesn't seem to be a clear understanding regarding a cause. For the last three years, Karena has been a board member of B*CURED, and has helped lead the organization towards its goals of raising awareness of the disease and funding for research. To date, B*CURED has raised $267,000 and made grants of over $105,000 to research. Another $100,000 will be granted by the end of 2011. As an all-volunteer organization with no permanent office space and very little overhead, B*CURED is able to put nearly all of its funds towards finding a cure for brain cancer.
Running the NYC Marathon will be the culminating event in my first year (since i was a kid!) of training and competing in local events, including ten cycling races, three triathlons (including an upcoming Half Ironman, gasp!), and four running road races. The NYC Marathon will be my first marathon! The training has been tough, but it’s been worth it. I’ve enjoyed sharing updates with many of you throughout the year and am very grateful for all the kind words of support and enthusiasm.
