THE STORY:
Anam Cara wrote -
SHIMMY MOB is the brain child of Francesca 'Sabeya' Anastasi of Vancouver, British Columbia. It is a fundraiser for shelters helping the domestically abused. On a particular day (usually World Belly Dance Day), dancers from around the world join together to do the same choreography in a quick mob-style performance, wearing the same similar simple outfits for the same general fight against domestic abuse. Each city's proceeds go to the local charity they choose.
The first year, 2011, the Shimmy Mob was new, many people had never heard of it, and, as many new projects go, there were some things to work through, though, over all, its organization was well planned. There were a little over 450 dancers in about 35 cities worldwide. It was meant to be a one-time event. However, many of the participants enjoyed the experience, thought it a great cause, and asked to do it again.
In 2012, the event grew to 3-4 times in size, with over 1650 dancers in 113 cities worldwide, with significantly more funds being raised for domestic abuse shelters around the world. This year, we hope to grow more...get the the word out and funding in against domestic abuse.
Please consider donating to our cause, and help change the life of a domestically abused victim back into an autonomous free individual.
