Remember your first summer job? Help give one to teens from Brooklyn public housing AND restore a historic ship! These are meaningful, paid jobs at a cool cultural non-profit!
With your help, PortSide can provide summer jobs to 5 teens from Brooklyn Public Housing (NYCHA) through NYC's DYCD Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP).
PortSide needs to raise $16,000 to hire five teens for the full summer.
DEADLINE EXTENDED THANKS TO NYCHA!
NYCHA is so intested in working with us that they offered PortSide flexibility. The teens could be here only part if the summer if we cannot raise the full $16,000, and they offered us more time to raise money. We have extended the campaign deadine past the original June 30th.
Donors are invited to a private viewing party in September.
Why PortSide needs your help
When the new US Congress banned earmarks last November, PortSide lost a $50,000 earmark for youth programs from Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez. We are trying to make up part of the resulting shortfall.
SYEP pays the youth salaries ( $7.25/hour, 25 hrs/wk, July & August). PortSide is required to fund the other expenses (supervisor, renovation tools and supplies).
Help a newly recognized historic ship!
May 2011, the tanker Mary A. Whalen was determined to be eligible to be on the National Register of Historic Places. More history here.
Help a ship that serves the public!
On the tanker deck, we show movies, have concerts, book readings and talks.
We give ship tours to the general public and as part of professional training for college professors. We open the deck for the public to kick back and enjoy in a casual way during "TankerTime."
