HERE'S THE STORY:
Signature Theater Company is the only arts organization I've stayed committed to for many years. And not just because I got my first paying job as an actor there.
Signature is a genuinely unique theater in that the company devotes each season to the work of a single playwright. We've presented the work of Edward Albee, Lee Blessing, Adrienne Kennedy, Maria Irene Fornes, John Guare, Bill Irwin, Romulus Linney, Charles Mee, Arthur Miller, The Negro Ensemble Company, Sam Shepard, Paula Vogel, August Wilson, Lanford Wilson and Horton Foote. Next year will be an exciting season as we will be featuring the work of Tony Kushner.
Commercial theater puts a pressure on playwrights..."What was your last hit?" but this threatens our opportunity to appreciate the great writers in American theater the same way we do great painters or musicians...by taking in the scope of their work over their career and seeing the whole tapestry of the themes they were investigating.
On top of all the great productions and the unique mission, Signature is the only theater in NY committed to making plays affordable and accessible to all people all the time. We offer all tickets to all shows for only $20. We do this by operating as a non-profit and by raising funds to be able to underwrite the price of the tickets so that people of all ages and walks of life and backgrounds from every part of the city can experience great theater and be affected by it.
