Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you know, my father had bulbar ALS. Bulbar ALS originates in the mouth and after a few short months after his diagnosis, my father could no longer eat, drink, or talk. For those of you who knew him, you know he was quite the conversationalist and could certainly light up any room. Once he lost his speech, his only way of communication was to write his thoughts in a few short sentences on a notepad. On the telephone, he would beep once for ‘Yes’, twice for ‘No’, three times for ‘I Love You’, and five times to email him so he could respond in greater detail. He was quite creative despite his limitations.
Avery, my daughter, and I were talking a few weeks ago about what he went through and she asked if she could do a fundraiser for ALS. Her goal is to raise 600 dollars.
So here is her plan. On November 6, 2011, she is going to keep silent and only communicate by writing for a day. Her goal is to keep quiet for a maximum of 10 hours. For those of you who know Avery, she is quite a talker – just like her grandfather was. She is asking that you pledge an amount per hour or provide a flat donation. You can either donate a flat rate now or wait till she finishes her day of silence and multiply your pledge per hour by the number of hours she was quiet. All proceeds will go to Project ALS.
