OCT is a grassroots nonprofit that has assembled a nationwide coalition of accomplished human rights and environmental lawyers to take on one of the biggest issues of our time: Climate Change. And on behalf of young people, who did nothing to cause the problem yet face the worst of the repercussions if we don't return to a balanced atmosphere. Last year, OCT coordinated a "hatch" of nationwide litigation on behalf of brave youth plaintiffs, using an unprecedented legal strategy that a former General Counsel of the EPA has hailed as "creative and outside the box."

OCT’s strategy has never before been tried (it’s been referred to as a “Hail Mary”). To my surprise and delight, it is already having far-reaching impacts. The media is taking it seriously, and the fossil fuel industry is nervous and intervening in court. As the litigation is gaining traction, some of the youth plaintiffs are being invited by their legislators wanting to understand their concerns and consider the scientific prescription for reversing the problem. (As just one example, two weeks ago in Washington DC, the Congressional Democratic Caucus formally voted to support the youth, and the plaintiffs were invited to speak with White House aides.)

Most of the lawyers and OCT staff are working pro-bono or for dirt pay (and doing the work of an army), but the unavoidable costs of litigation remain high… especially since OCT is working with some of the world’s most esteemed climatologists as expert witnesses.
